I get a number of letter
from people, some of whom
feci strongly that a man
should be present at the birth
of his child. They feel he
ought to stand by his wife
and he ought to see her suf-

then, he will
appreciate her
all the more,

are looking anything but at

I hear from some doctors
who say that they will per
mit the man to watch, if he
is very anxious to, and his
wife docs not object. Other
doctors say that they can't
be bothered to have a lay
man around in a place where
everything must be kept ster

A man who knows nothing
about asepsis (the keeping of
bad germs away from the
mother) might turn out to be
a "bull in a china shop." As
some doctors said, if sudden
ly tilings should happen to
go wrong, and the doctor had
to deliver the child quickly
in order to save his or her
life, he couldn't have a hus
band around who might faint,
and fall onto a table of sterile
supplies.
Perhaps one of the best ar
guments I have heard against
letting a husband into the
room comes in a letter from
a man who evidently insisted
on being present in the hos
pital when his baby was born,
and who now is almost angry

i enough at the doctor to want

Routine Operation
What happened was that
the obstetrician did the usual
operation of episiotomy (the
cutting of the tissues) so that
there is more room for the
child's advancing head. Now
adays, this little operation is
performed almost routinely
in order to keep the woman
from becoming badly torn.
Naturally, for an over-sensitive
and perhaps emotionally
unstable man, who had nev
er seen any operation of any
kind, it was a tremendous
shock to see the doctor take
a knife and deliberately cut
deeply into his wife's tissues.
The shock was so great that
not only has the man not got
ten over it, but every day he
seems to be getting more and
more bitter about it.
I can see why he is still
angry about what the obste
trician did - apparently so
cold-bloodedly - and I can
only hope that soon he gets
straightened out mentally
about it. Some kindly person
ought to talk to him. Perhaps
it would not have been so
bad if the obstetrician had
thought to explain first, what
he was going to do, and why.

Attempted Burglary
Jackson county sheriffs of
ficers and state police are in
vestigating the attempted safe
burglary at Tom Thumb Mar
ket at Four Corners on Table
Rock rd. Friday.
Thieves failed to obtain
any money, state police and
sheriff's deputies said.
The thieves bored holes in
the roof and used a rope to
slide down from the roof to
the inside of the building.
They attempted to punch the
safe and remove the safe plate,
but didn't gain access to it,
a sheriff's deputy said.
FAULTS OF LABOR
Keokuk, Iowa -r (UPD - The
State Central Savings Bank
figures youths ought to enjoy
the fruits of their labor, even
if it's vandalism. The bank
offered free lumber to the
parents of vandals who dis
mantled its wooden sidewalk
benches. The bank said the
lumber "will make a heck of
a swell paddle, and used on
one end, might cause some
thought at the other end."
