Nixon To Discuss
Farm Policy With
Organization Heads
Washington-IUPD-Vice Presi
dent Richard M. Nixon ar
ranged to meet today with
leaders of the three major
farmers' organizations in his
effort to capture the farm vote
in the presidential election.
The Republican nominee
scheduled separate afternoon
conferences with officials of
the American Farm Bureau
Federation, the Farmers
Union and the National
Grangee.
Nixon is trying to stem re
cent Democratic election
trends in traditionally Repub
lican Midwest farm states. He
has in effect repudiated the
policies of Agriculture Secre
tary Ezra T. Benson, which
are; highly unpopular with
some farmers. . ,
' Predicts Policy Support
Benson predicted Thursday,
however, that his policies
would gain more support be
tween now and election day.
He pledged his wholehearted
support to Nixon's White
House drive but said he had
"no definite plans" for cam
paigning. Nixon conferred Thursday
with his congressional farm
advisers, including GOP mem
bers of the Senate and House
Agriculture Committees, in a
continuing search for a new
program to win farm state
votes.
The conferees agreed that a
series of regional meetings
should be held to get grass
roots viewpoints on ways "to
develop improved agricultural
conditions."
At the same time, Nixon
was reported reexamining his

timism about the entire
South." He said it had been
widely believed that the
nomination of Sen. Lyndon B
Johnson of Texas as Sen. John
F. Kennedy's running mate
had locked up the South for
the Democrats.
"We do not think this
true," Klein said.
Valuable Indian
Rhinoceros Born
London-IUPD-One of the most
valuable animals in the zoo
world, a giant male Indian
rhinoceros, was born today at
the Whipsnade Zoo outside
London. A zoo official, who
said "mother and child are
doing well," estimated its
value at about $15,000.
The first such rhino ever
bred in Britain was born at
Whipsnade three years ago
and sold this year to the Mil
waukee, Wis., zoo. Only four
ever have been born in cap
tivity anywhere in the world.

show, "Aero-Space 60" Aug.
25-28 in Portland,
Dr. Willy Ley, one of the
country's foremost outer-space
experts, is scheduled to speak.
The four-day show also will
include a wide display of air
craft, and presentation of a
Fury jet aircraft to the Ore
gon Museum of Science and
Industry.
Youths Accused
Of Killing Pair
On Drink Spree
Riverside, Calif.-HJPII-Police
today accused three youths of
slaying a well-to-do couple in
their home last week during
a beer drinking spree.
All three youths admitted
their part in the slayings of
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Duvel
on Aug. 11, detective Sgt.
Irvin Cross said.
He reported the two 6-year-old
and one 19-year-old
youths "very possibly were
drunk" when they knifed and
choked the couple in the bed
room of their $30,000 home.
They had invaded the home
in search of money, Cross
said.
Gained $200
The youths told police they
gained $200 for the double
slaying.
Tom O'H a r a apparently
went in the home with the
other two but took no part
in the actual killings, said
Cross. The detectives said,
however, O'Hara was booked
on suspicion of murder with
the other two since he was
along.
The others were identified
as David Seiterle, 19, and
Karl Gentry, 16. All are from
Riverside.
Seiterle is a former mental
patient, Cross said. Only the
day before the slayings Sei
terle had started a job as a
vitamin salesman for Duvel.
Youth Recognized
The detective said the Du-
vels apparently were killed
so they would not be able
to lead police to Seiterle, who
was recognized when the cou
ple awoke to find the youths
inside their home.
Duvel was a vitamin dis-
t r i b u t o r and accumulated
large sums of cash at his
home, Cross said. Duvel used
his home as an office to op
erate his business.
Duvel, 45, and his wife,
Sylvia, 47, were found by
their maid, each tied to a
twin bed.
Each had been stabbed
seven times in the back and
then choked.

38, sued for divorce Thursday
from Sir Cedric Hardwicke,
67, accusing her husband of
deserting her.
Lady Hardwicke, a former
actress now living in Beverly
Hills, said in her suit she
needed $1,895 monthly living
expenses plus "reasonable"
support for their son, Michael.
She listed Hardwicke's
monthly income at $15,000.
Lady Hardwicke and the
veteran actor were married in
1950. She said Hardwicke left
her in 1958 and now makes
his home in New York.
