Gunnar Jumps
Into Coroner
Controversy
Salem-flMl-Republican State
Chairman Peter Gunnar, Sa
lem, jumped into the coroner
controversy Thursday with
the charge that "the fall elec
, tion campaign of 1960 will be
remembered as Sweetland's
silly season if the senator
from Milwaukie continues to
campaign in the same ridicu
lous manner in the months
ahead."
State Sen. Monroe Sweet
land (D-Milwaukie) is Secre
tary of State Howell Appling
Jr.'s opponent in the Novem
ber election.
Gunnar declared Sweetland
"has made a fall guy" of Dem
ocratic State Chairman Rob
ert Straub by convincing him
he should make "an unsup
ported charge" against Ap
pling in the election of cor
oners. "Evidently Sen. Straub
doesn't know enough about
this situation to realize the
secretary of states' office has
been unusually alert in find
ing a loop hole in a law which
came out of a legislative in
terim committee which was
chairmaned by Sen. Monroe
Sw'eetland," Gunnar said.
He added that if there are
inadequacies in the coroner
law the blame should rest
on Sweetlands' shoulders.
Two Millionth Loan
To Be Made by Bank
Somewhere in Oregon this
week, a First National Bank
of Oregon customer will re
ceive the two millionth in
stallment loan processed by
the statewide bank's Install
ment loan department.
1 J. C. Rule, vice president
and head of the department,
announced the milestone as
the department neared the ob
servance of its 27th anniver
sary. The two million loans
will total over $1,288,728,600,
he indicated.
"The identity of the two
millionth borrower will not
be known until reports from
the bank's 83 offices are as
sembled," Rule said,
Automobile and personal
loans account for the major
ity of the loans made by the
bank in postwar period, since
August, 1945, Since that time
639,900 auto loans worth
$766 million have been made
and 554,000 personal loans
worth $166 million were
made by the bank.
