Three Successes
Bring Glimpse ol
Future for U.S.
Washington -(Science Serv
ice) - Suddenly, the U.S. it
looking tomorrow in the lace:
1. World-wide commumca
tions-in particular! television
-seemed right around the coi
ner as President Eisenhower's
voice was bounced coast-to-
coast via the balloon satellite,
Echo.
2. Re-entry problems tot a
man orbiting in space seemed
solved. And it looked like the
U.S. now had a way to get
film or data sheets down from
a spy or weather satellite
without ending the lite Of the
entire satellite.
3. Plight to the inner edge
of space by a manned, winged
plane seemed another step
nearer as Air Force MaJ. Rob
ert White fleW the X1S to
131,000 feet, 26 miles ab6ve
the earth.
Termed 'Fantatlit'
"This is fantastic," he said.
National Aeronautics and
Space administration and De
fense department persbnhel
here felt the same Way.
The three successes coming
so fast in succession will soon
be followed by Courier, a sec
ond communications satellite
with adtiVe Internal mecha
nisms. Radio waves will not
be reflected from it but will
be accepted and rcbrohtlcast
from tape.
This panorama of accom
plishment seems to be a pay
off for America's broadly
based space effort. The varie
ty of effort and achievement
is spectacular ... an so far
unmatched by Russia.
Nobody in Washington
could be more pleased than
those officials who have insist
ed on breadth When Others
cried for crash programs in
speciflo areas,
