Trees ...

lowing comments on trees,
particularly those adapta
ble to street use in Medford,
have been prepared by John
Gribble, well known re
tired forester, and will be
run in a series from time
to time.
Northern Red Oak, (Quer
cus borealis, (rubra, is notive
to the Northwest quarter of
the United States, southern
Appalachian mountains and
southeast Canada. The red
oak is considered one of the
best shade trees in the east
half of the United States, it
reaches heights of 90 to 150
feet, straight, clean trunk
with symmetrical, spreading
crown.
Young trees have greenish
bark, becoming dark and
ridged on older trees. Leaves
are 6 to 9 inches long, have
7 to 11 uniform, bristle-pointed
lobes, dull green above,
paler below, brilliant red in
autumn. The acorns are large,
plump, in flat, shallow cups
(or saucers). The meat is bit
ter. There's a goodly number
of Red or Black oaks. Sar
gent names over 40 oaks.
The Red oak thrives in
average, drained soil, and
makes most rapid growth of
all oaks. It is the best shade
and park oak. It is exten
sively planted in Europe. 'Tis
said the United States White
oak will not live in Europe,
tho the Red oak does, with
vigor.
If the fruit is an acorn
you may be sure the tree it
came from was an oak, even
though its more of a shrub.
Golden Chinquapin, (often
called chinquapin oak), seems
part chestnut and part oak.
It has evergreen leaves, like
mountain laurel, being a com
bination of three kinds of
trees. It's a puzzle, may have
ripening nuts and blossoms
at the same time. Dame Na
ture used more oaks than any
other kind of trees in land
scaping the earth, and the Red
oak is farthest north grow
ing oak, it stands both hot
and cold extremes.
White oak is so well known
that many people hardly
realize others can be oaks,
with such entirely different
leaves, as Live, Laurel, Wil
low, Chestnut-leaf oaks. White
oak acorns are pretty good
to eat, especially roasted. In
dians use them much as food;
hogs and bears fatten on them.
Bluejays, crows, squirrels,
mice, eat and cart them away
to cache. The oak is used for
more purposes than any other
tree.
The Nothern Red oak is
for Dellwood st, 80 to 100
feet apart; Eastwood (Main to
Cemetery), 80 to . 100 feet;
Magnolia, one to a lot; Mur
phy road north- to Barnett,
80 to 100 feet; Whitman
(Melrose to Stewart), 70 to
80 feet apart.

county court and County En

Wednesday were promised a
chicken dinner if they would
inspect the condition of the
south fork of Little Butte
creek rd. soon.
An area delegation of four
women and one man present
ed a petition, signed by 38
people who live on or near
the road, asking it to be paved
and widened. This would in
volve an eight mile section
from the Lake Creek rd. junc
I tion to the forest hminrfarv t
was explained.
Intensive logging from the
head of Deer creek and heavy
tourist and recreation traffic
over the road during the
week ends creates "a terrible
dust problem," Mrs. A. R.
Burell, spokesman for the
group said.
Mrs. J. R. Tyrell, another
resident of the area, said the
narrowness of the road and its
sharp corners made it danger
ous for children riding in the
school bus and for motorists
when logging trucks are
using the road.
The county court and en
gineer said they would inspect
the road to see if it could be
oiled. Carstensen said im
provement of the road is in
cluded in the county's next
three-year program. Some
roads in the current program
cannot be worked on this sea
son, he said, so it would be
impossible to improve the Lit
tle Butte rd. section as re
quested this summer, he said.
"The road dust settles on
our fields and sifts into our
houses," Mrs. Burrell said. "It
has made it difficult to har
vest hay and we can't take
cattle into the field next to
the road," she said.

An FFA boy who almost
didn't enter his shop project
in the Jackson County 4-H
and FFA Fair' walked off with
the outstanding individual
shop award Wednesday.
Bill Rassmussen, Phoenix,
won the purple ribbon with
rosette for his new truck rack
mounted on his pickup truck
bed and a trailer hitch.
Elvin Hawkin, Eagle Point,
won the championship ribbon
for his squeeze chute.
The exhibits in the FFA
farm shop division consisted
of farm shop projects con
structed by the three Jackson
county vocational agriculture
departments.
