At Summer Wanes Insects
Near End of the Line
Don't look now, but the
summer is passing. Every
where we look there are un
mistakable signs that wild
things are already preparing
for winter. There is a change
of pace. Feathered migrants
are beginning their prepara-
tions. Their families have been
raised; even the youngsters
are ready.
The insects are in feverish
haste to complete their work.
' They have laid their eggs,
now only death awaits them;
the permanent end of their
time in the summer sun. Come
next spring and the air will
again be peopled with insects,
but these will be the children
of the ones now preparing to
die.
Tattered Wings
As the days become pro
gressively shorter, the wings
of flying insects become tat
tered and torn. The former
proud wasp, who preened her
self so carefully a few weeks
ago, now lets down and makes
no effort to clean her body
.or flex her wings.: Her bright
colors have faded; the irrides
cent sheen has dulled into
dirty gray. Not only the body
but the spirit Itself is weak
and listless. Up under the
eaves of the shed are the little
daubs of dried mud that hold
the egg the wasp laid; there
is ample food for the babies
that will hatch. Her work is
complete; she is very tired.
On the ground at the base
of a tree a battered dragonfly
flutters its torn wings in a
feeble circle. She has forgot
ten the eggs she dropped in
the little pond.
Even the ants have changed
their antics; busy before, they
now become feverish with
their mad rush to complete
their work. Some, having lost
legs in accidents or fights, ig
nore the inconvenience of
crippled bodies in a last des
perate struggle to place the
last egg in the secret cham-

ing for' the transformation
that will bring forth a soft
bodied moth when the spring
comes again. Within the silk
en shroud, the body will
change its structure and its
way of life.
Tempo Slower
The crickets are still chirp
ing madly at season's end, but
the tempo is slower. Martyr
like, they are trying to be
their usual cheerful selves,
even though their time to die
is so very near. Only a few
days ago the eggs were plant
ed, just under the ground's
surface like kernels of corn
in a garden, and now the little
musicians are ready for death
that is only hours away; they
face their inevitable end with
a "song."
This is the end for all the
millions, of . little things that
constitute the "world of the
insects;" Too soon now, a
north wind with an unusual
chill will rustle the last leaf
and hasten the dying struggle
of the insect. The fires of in
sect life sputter feebly for a
little time, then go out one
by one.

carry property damage insurance
in the minimum amount of $50,

The usual exclusion of liability
under property damage coverage
for property in the care, custody,
and control of the Insured shall be
deleted from the coverage required.

School District No, 91 reserves
the right to reject any and all bids,
to waive any informality in bids
received, and to accept or reject
