Uranium Contracts
Lakovicw-IUrtl-Elmo Smith,
Republican candidate for the
U.S. Senate, said Tuesday
evening that "uranium should
be released for private devel
opment and uranium mining
should be opened to small
prospectors."
Smith told a dinner audi
ence here that if elected to
the Senate he would work to
obtain new contracts for small
uranium miners.
His remarks related to Lake-
view's newest industry which
faces a crisis in 1062 at expi
ration of the Lakeview Min
ing company's contract with
the Atomic Energy commis
sion.
"If a prospector did find a
uranium mine now, he
couldn't work it because he'd
have no market," Smith said.
If uranium wore available
for use in Individual enter
prise, it would give the small
miner a market. We must
make the necessnry changes
lo foster development of the
uranium industry."
California Town
Damaged by Fire
Palmero, Calif. -IUPU- Fire
men early today contained
wind-driven flames that fed
on thousands of gallons of
olive oil and threatened to
destroy this small northern
California community.
The fire broke out Tuesday
and destroyed an olive proc
essing plant, 30,000 gallons of
olive oil and at least 10
homes. Several small fires
still were burning, but the
wind had died down and the
worst appeared over.
"It's not under control yet,"
said fire boss Dean Munson
of the California Division of
Forestry. "You never know
when a good wind will bring
it to life." ,
The fire broke out In dry
grass on the outskirts of the
community and roared into
town, burning grass and trees
in the yards of the 2,500 resi

imately 4,500 members of the
lumbers and Pipefitters Un
ion were meeting today in
Oregon, Idaho and Washing
ton to consider latest wage
proposals by their employers.
These proposals, calling for
19 cents an hour pay boosts
for 1961 and the same for
1962, have already been turn
ed down by union negotia
tors. The union wants a 34
cent increase for 1961 and 33
cents for 1962.
The current contract be
tween the union and the em
ployers expired at midnight.
Recluse's Rooms
Littered With Cash
New York-CJPD-The body of
a 73-year-old semi-recluse was
found Monday in an apart
ment littered with magazines,
newspapers, used razor blades
and about $45,000 in cash.
It took police nearly all
night to count the cash, which
included envelopes full of
$1,000 and $500 bills, smaller
bills, and even coins right
down to pennies.
Also found in the five
r o o m, sparsely furnished
apartment of George Aichele,
who owned a number of apart
ment buildings, were 80 bank
books showing deposits rang
ing from $10 to $10,000, and
a safe containing beads and
