Prefers Dennis
To the Editor: I heartily
agree with Mr. Vowell's re
cent communication suggest
ing that the political cartoon
be kept off the front page and
possibly moved to the editor
ial page
Mr. Herblock's so called
sense of humor fails to amuse
many readers.
Why not move "Dennis'' up
front?

Pleasant Sounds
To the Editor: Neighbor
hoods are peculiar places;
each has it's own personality
and outstanding characteristic.
My neighborhood is one of
good sounds-of music, and I
have enjoyed so many hours
here that I want to share them
with readers.
Each Sunday morning, from
the auditorium at Lincoln
school emanate sounds as rem
iniscent of childhood as the
sweet odor of the old bakery.
Many voices raise the old
songs, "Jesus Is Coming to
Earth Again," "On Jordan's
Stormy Banks I Stand," oth
ers. School will soon start and
the entire week will be filled
with beautiful music coming
from the school; children's
voices singing primary bal
lads, the bitter-sweet sounds
of the grade school band re
hearsing with regular blasts
from several instruments
played largely out of tune.
Across the street a young
lady, proud owner of a con
vertible automobile, washes
and polishes her prize very
often, and as she does, she
plays it's radio, and living
happy rock-and-roll music
rests in. the air about her. It
is not offensive; it is pleasant.
Several small children sit
on the street curbing each
evening, as this spot is shady
and cool, and they are too hot
to tease and play, so they sing
-"You Are My Sunshine,"
"Blue Tail Fly."
A hi-fi owner In the neigh
borhood has a collection of
Sousa records, and each day
at mid-morning I am stirred
with mixed feelings of pride
for my country and Joy that
I was fortunate enough to
have been born here, when I
hear the mighty thunder of
"Semper Fldelis," "Stars ana
Stripes," others.
Another hi-fi owner has
some fine old rare discs, Rudy
Valee, Al Jolson, Arthur Pry
or, Nora Bayes, Jimmy Du
rante. Ud the street each morning,
an unknown person in one of
the homes practices her piano
lessons each day, then she
follows with playing and sing
ing the classics or the old, old
standards, and for a while I
am a child when "Let Me Call
You Sweetheart" was out
standing. . I wouldn't object, not at all,
if Mr. Gilman were given per
mission to bring his musical
ice cream wagon into my
neighborhood-how sweet and
Dleasant and secure and
American it seems.

Who would ever notice
your broad middle, thin spot

A person who can write

important.

SUv In Oregonl
To the Editor: Am I ever
ashamed!
Recenti I was writing to
a friend in Colorado. I' was
telling her about all the beau
tiful things to see in Southern

manv.faceted Rogue River,
Oregon Caves, the Vortex, the
Shakespearean festival-when
suddenly my pen stopped
writing and I gasped as I re
alized we had just returned
frnm a camDing trip ... to
ho California Redwoods.
We've only visited a few
of our own attractions but
considering them places for
week end trips we trotted off

Crime Discovered
After It's Solved
Dracut, Mass.-A crime was
solved here before it was even
discovered.
State troopers found two
men asleep in a parked car.
Under questioning, the pair
admitted breaking into a New
buryport school and stealing
safe containing $100. The
empty safe was found in a
cemetery.
They Ask Help
To the Editor: Medford tax
payers, how about helping the
families south of Barnett rd.
hold the Manor in Medford!
Our main object is for our
children to go to Medford
schools.
Thursday night, Phoenix
brought out that it was "asi
nine" for us to take our half
million dollar assessed valua
tion from them, also the S1V4
million of the Manor, thereby
causing them a hardship. Fig
ures proved beyond a doubt
that cost per school child in
Phoenix would be equitable
to Meatoro s without the Man
or and Barnett rd. area. There
is a school equalization board
to help districts in danger of
falling below standard.
Phoenix people stated they
had purposely chosen Phoenix
schools for their children, that
it was just as good as Med
ford's. We, in this area, are
willing to accede their choice
but surely we have the same
right to choose what is best
for ours.
However, we do not con
cede that Phoenix has just as
much to offer as Medford
schools. Their own superin
tendent admitted they lack
certain subjects, no major
work group for faster stu
dents, no summer school pro
gram, etc. We feel this is not
in keeping with our country's
demand for an accelerated
school program.
After being called "asi
nine," "selfish," and told we
could move, it was implied
we were pretty "dumb" to
build homes without checking
school districts. People in this
area originally came from all
over the United States. Now,
these "dumb" people could
not and still will not conceive
the idea that you could live in
one city (within stone's throw
of the school), and be made to
go to another city to school.
They had never heard of such
thing, and thought with a
100 per cent petition, this be
ing a democracy, that this
small, logical change could be
made easily. That goes to
show how dumb some people
are, and how easily they
throw around anywhere from
15.000 to 525,000.
Mr. Higgins, representing
the Manor, stated that people
coming to live there, are com
ing to Medford, Ore,, not
Phoenix. Medford police, fire
men, water, sewer will serv
ice it. It is a Medford project,
vour city limits. Do we
Medford people want the
school tax to help our tax bur
den, or are you willing to let
Phoenix have this $2Vi mil
lion assessed valuation, when
they put no effort or money
into It?

Come On, Arkiesl
To the Editor: All you Ark-
ips what's the matter with
you? Even tl.e Oakies are get
ting ahead of us. I know we
know as much as they do, or
the Texans, either one, and
they all have picnics. Are we
so poor that we can l?
I see every other state is
having one. I would like to
meet some of the good old
Arkies. Don't feel ashamed
We have as good a state as
the next one.
You remember all the de
fense plants during the Sec
ond War. There was a gooa
saying, "Come on all you Ark
ies and Oakies. let's take Ja
pan.' We took California and
never lost a man." ,
Oh, I know we aren't that
good yet, but I sure would
love to see them all gathered.

could swap stories and more
stories, I know. '

It's Money That's Needed
To the Editor: Your recent
articles and editorials con
cerning the need for devel
opment and management of
recreational sites in our for
est lands are descriptive of
the situation and very wel
come by those of us who are
impatient to get the job done.
As you have pointed out,
when the public is aware of
the abundant potential avail
able for woodland recreation
development and when the
public recognizes its own
need for such development,
then the job will be done, be
cause Congress will approve
the necessary budget authority.
I have served on the U.S.
Forest Service Advisory
Council for Region 8 (Ore
gon and Washington) for the
past ten years, and can as
sure you that the Forest Serv
ice is well aware of the need
for development and anxious
for congressional authoriza
tion permitting them to do
the' job. Actually, I believe
that the Advisory Council has
spent fully . one-third of its
time studying the large in
ventory of potential recrea
tion development in the For
est Service lands and possi
ble means of gaining such de
velopment. We have always
advocated congressional bud
get appropriations as the best
answer, but in lieu of such
appropriations have urged
from time to time communi
ty, county and state partici
pation and development of
Forest Service recreational
sites under various plans.
You need have no fear
about the Forest Service's
willingness and ability to
carry out the development
and management of recrea
tional sites within the Forest
Service boundaries.
The only reason that the
"district rangers" do not now
develop camp sites and "bear
wood" Is that their time Is
allocated to carrying out the
duties authorized by Congress
in the budget. If at any time
we have congressional author
ization for fulfillment of our
recreational needs, the For
est Service will happily do
the job, and it will be direct
ed by personnel trained in
the forest recreational fields.
What is even more impor
tant, it will be done by an or
ganization and men fully ac
quainted with all of the forest
area, and the recreational
program will be amendable
to changing public needs and
to changing forest conditions.
I urge you to continue to
keep before the public the
picture of our tremendous
recreational potential and the
public benefit which can be
gained by its development.

Forest Service Advisory
Council, Region 6,

Salaries, Doctors, and Justice
To the Editor: Why have
so much about the salaries
of our legislators? If one is
elected, he stays there on a
starvation salary until he is
ousted by someone else luck
ier, so they claim. Must be
graft some place.
Me, I have lived on $80 per
month that I get from dis
ability social security, when
I shouldn t have been laid
up over six weeks at most
if the doctor had done what
he should have and had me
pay for it.
My trouble happened on
June 4, 1948. I fell and threw
my hip out. The doctor didn't
set it and let the leg draw up.
I've been walking with a
crutch ever since.
I had a letter sent to me
by father. He said that he
put five dollars in it but when
I finally got it opened there
was no money. I called the
postal inspector here and he
came to see me. He wanted
the envelopes but didn't even
want to give me a receipt
for them.
So I waited a couple of
months. I didn't hear from
them so I wrote to the post
master general. Their man
came, at least said he was,
but he didn't or wouldn't In
dicate where the letter was
opened.
Another thing. My two sis
ters and I made up $500 to
take care of father. I got a
plot by mother but the wel
fare wouldn't let me keep It.
Is that Justice? If it is, we
haven't got such a thing.
