In The Valley
Mr. and Mrs. Horace A. Carter and iheir
three children left last week after having
been guests in the home of Mrs. Carter's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Lovejoy, Old
Military road. Mrs. Carter is the former
Jerrilee Lovejoy. The children, Julia lee,
11, Margaret lois, 4, and Christopher, 8,
soon made a pet of their grandparent's
dog, Jet. The Carters live in Severna Park,

Mrs. Harold Offord, (at left) Berkeley,
Calif., and Mrs. W. B. McCullough, Ash
land, are both interested in writing and
in the Oregon Shakespearean festival.
Mrs. Offord and her daughter have
spent the past several summers in Ash
land; Judy participates in the festival
and her mother, who has published sev
eral books under the name of Lenore
Glen Offord, wove the festival into the
plots of two novels, "Enchanted August"
and "Walking Shadow," a mystery. Mrs.
McCullough, formerly women's editor of
The Ashland Tidings, wrote the paper's
festival play reviews for a number of
years, a task which Mrs. Offord took
over this season. Mrs. McCullough is
chairman this year of the Soroptimist
club booth which the club operates as
a scholarship fund-raising project.

Mrs. Allen B. Drury, Medford, Red Cross canteen corps volunteer, is pictured stirring the
slew which the canteen workers prepared outdoors on an Army gasoline-heated stove for
the recent "disaster day" training staged by the Jackson county chapter. The Red Cross
building on Hawthorne avenue was designated disaster headquarters for the training, and
volunteers in food, housing, clothing, communications, transportation, first aid, registration .
and other necessary units reported for duly.

Summer has been a busy time for Mrs. Ralph Cook who was one of 35 womln from Christian
churches (Disciples of Christ) in 17 areas of the United Stales and Canada to participate In a series
of conferences at Purdue university In Indiana In preparation for the second quadrennial assembly ,
of the International Christian Women's Fellowship. The assembly, In July of 1961, is expected to
attract about 4,500 women. Mrs. Cook heads a committee which will provide worship settings In .
both residence and assembly halls. The Medford woman, worship d I r e c t o r for the Christian
Women's Fellowship of Oregon, has been asked to be guest directof of a CFW retreat for Utah ;
women September 9-10.' Mrs. Cook, who also works two days a week as a volunteer for the Rogue
Valley Memorial Hospital auxiliary, is pictured here as she reported for duty at the hospital Tuesday
