Thursday when head coach

Milwaukee halfback J.ay Beck
will miss the game becnuse of
a strained leg tendon failed to
respond to treatment.
Beck had been spelling Mel
Renfro at left halfback at the
Metros' training camp at

Beck's place has been taken

Statl hopes were bolstered
by the return to action of
South Salem tackle Woody
Bennett. Bennett suffered a
shoulder injury early In the
week at the State training
camp at Woodrow Wilson high
school. It was earlier thought
that Bennett would miss the
contest.
In addition to shifting War
ren from fullback to left half
back, the Metros also shifted
Cleveland's Dennis Maloney
from center to tackle.
Medford's Skip Bennett and
Marshfield's Marv Harris are
co-captains of the State team.
State coach Fred Splcgel
berg of Medford said he hasn't
planned any speclnl defenses
tn "contain" the Metros' Mel
Renfro. Spicgclbcrg said "We
know we're going to have to
give him some yards." The
State mentor added: "There's
no way to put a complete stop
to a player of his ability. Our
only hope is that we can keep
him under reasonable con
trol."

LA Dodgers
Slice Gap
On Pirates
Cincinnati -IUPD- The Los
Angeles Dodgers have 50
games, roughly one-third of
the season, left to make up the
six that lie between them and
the Pittsburgh Pirates.
They start working on that
little program tonight, bank
ing on the long right arm of
Don Drysdale (10-11), who will
pitch against Cincinnati's Jay
Hook (8-12) at Crosley Field.
Manager Walter Alston's
team made up one game
Thursday night on the league
leading Bucs by beating the
Reds, 3-0, while Pittsburgh
barely lost to St. Louis in 12
innings, 3-2.
Koufax At Best .
Sandy Koufax pitched one
of the best games of the season
for the Dodgers, going the
full nine innings and holding
Vada Pinson, Ed Bailey and
company to just two hits, both
singles, and one base on balls.
His control, not his best at
tribute, was near perfect.
His specialty, strikeouts, al
so was in evidence. Thirteen
Reds went out by that route. .
Sandy's .record is now 5-8,
nothing to write home to
Brooklyn about, but the hand
some, hard-throwing bachelor
has won his last four straight.
The game was played al
most as if the players were
participating in a gentlemanly
game of cricket on some green
lawn in Sussex, England, des
pite widespread fear the feud
between the two clubs over
beanballs and home plate col
lisions would erupt Into open
battle.

Giants End
Loss Binge,
Tip Braves
Milwaukee - (UPD - The San
Francisco Giants, somewhat
shell shocked, attempt a two
game "win streak" tonight
after having reassured Candle
stick fans no team can lose
them all.
The Giants snapped out of
a six-game losing binge-equal-1
n g their longest victory
drought since moving to San
Francisco - Thursday night by
edging a stubborn Milwaukee
Braves contingent, 8-7.
Manager Tom Sheehan will
nominate cither undefeated
rookie Juan Marichal (3-0) or
Jack Sanford (0-10) tonight in
an effort to keep things on a
positive note. Milwaukee is
expected to counter with vet
eran Warren Spahn (12-7).
Eruption Contained
The fifth place Giants
moved to within five games
of the first division by outlast
ing the Braves. But reliefer
Johnny Anlonelli had to con
tain a sudden ninth - inning
Milwaukee eruption to do it.
Hardluck Billy O'Dell
notched his sixth victory
against eight defeats although
he was lifted during a Brave
uprising in the eighth. The
Giant hurlcr gave up nine hits
and all seven runs before
yielding to Anlonelli.
Giant batters chased four
Milwaukee twirlers for 14
hits,, including Jimmy Daven
port's f if Hi homer of the sea
son in the third with Joey
Amalfltano and O'Dell
aboard. The blow put San
Francisco ahead, 5-0.

Pennant push?
Paul Richards says "it could
be.",
What else can you possibly
call it when his charged-up
Baltimore Orioles win six in a
row, climb within a game of
first place and puncture the
myth that they can't hit their
way out of a paper bag?
Even the hard-to-impress
Richards is blinking at the
Orioles' total of 14 homers In
the past five days. They teed
off for four home runs against
the Detroit Tigers Thursday
in a 6-1 victory that was thteir
11th in the last 12 games.
Rookie Ron Hansen hit his
13th homer in the second in
ning, Walt Dropo connected
with the bases empty in the
third and rookie Dave Nichol
son belted a three-run homer
in the same game. Those three
were at the expense of loser
Don Mossi.
Then with Hank Agulrre
pitching for Detroit in the
eighth, rookie Jim Gentile,
who had replaced Dropo at
first base, slammed his 16th
homer. Jack Fisher limited
the Tigers to seven hits in
brineing his record to 8-9. The
defeat was Detroit's fourth
straight and sixth in seven
games since Joe Gordon took
over last Friday nigm.
The Red Sox beat the In
dians, 5-2, and the Senators
ortffPd the Athletics. 5-4, in
other AL games. The first
place Yankees and third-place
White Sox were idle.
In the National league, Stan
(The Man) Musial's two-run
homer in the 12th inning gave
the Cardinals a 3-2 victory
over the first-place Pirates,
fiandv Koufax struck out 13
batters in leading the Dodgers
to a 3-0 win over the Beds,
and the Giants beat the
Braves, 8-7, in the only other
scheduled game.
Rip Repulski and Don Bud-
riin each drove in two runs in
Boston's victory over Cleve
land. Tribe Manager Jimmy
Dykes, who is having no bet
ter luck than uoraon ai De
troit, watched the Indians lose
thpir fifth game in the last six
starts. The Red Sox rapped
loser Jack Harshman and Don
Newcombe for 10 hits, includ
ing a homer by Repulski. Jim
Piersall hit his 14th homer off
winner Ike Delock.
Killebrew Tees Off
Harmon Killebrew account
ed for all five Washington
runs against Kansas City. He
drove in four runs with his
16th and 17th homers off los
er Ray Herbert and scored a
fifth one after singling in the
third inning. Tex Clevenger
went 7 13 innings and won
his fourth game against seven
defeats.
It was simply a case of too
much Musial for the Priates.
Loser Bob Friend allowed
only seven hits, but Musial
collected three of them. Two
were doubles and the other
his 12th inning homer
with one on that snapped the
pirates' seven-game winning
streak and led the Cardinals
to their fifth straight victory.
Musial's 12th homer of the
season moved the Cards with
in four games of first place.
Ernie Broglio, who struck out
nine and gave up eight hits,
won his 14th game against
five losses. He had a scare in
the last of the 12th though
when the Pirates came back
with a run on a single, an in
field out and Rocky Nelson's
double, which barely missed
being a homer.
Sandy Koufax of the Dodg
ers limited the Reds to two
hits In winning his fifth
game. Rookie Jim Maloney
lost his third game in a row
even though striking out
eight. The first of his six
walks led to one Dodger run
and two errors paved the way
for the second Dodger mark
er. Charlie Neat collected
three of the seven hits off
Maloney.
The Giants broke out with
14 hits to snap a six-game los
ing streak and dump the
Braves into fourth place. Jim
Davenport hit a three-run
homer for San Francisco and
Orlando Cepeda and Bob
Schmidt each had three hits.
Milwaukee filled the bases
with two out in the ninth but
Johnny Antonelli got Bill
Bruton on a grounder to end
the game. Billy O'Dell was
the winner and Juan Pizarro,
ifirst of four Milwaukee pitch
ers, the loser.
