Sometimes the body fights
these cells to a standstill.
For instance; one day I saw
an autopsy on a woman who
had died after many years of
suffering with heart disease.
I knew that 7 years before,
she had had an inoperable
cancer of the neck of the
womb. Radium had been in

perfectly. Imagine my sur

abdomen was opened, a mass

me wilh pain in her right hip.
An x-ray examination show
ed it was full of cancer cells.
These had probably come
from a cancer of her breast
which had been removed 14
years before! I prescribed
some x-ray treatment which
stopped her pain. Two years
later, when she was last in
my office, she was well and
comfortable, but I could see
that the cancer cells were
still in her hip bone.
In the old days, around
1890, when cancers of the
breast were seldom operated
on, the statistics showed tnat
in some 10 per cent of the
women, the body held the
cancer under control for, as
I remember; Jive years, and
in five per cent, the body
kept things under control for
10 years or more.
In my long medical life I
have seen many cases in
which cancer cells, left in the
body during an operation, did
not grow.
Now, I read of a recent dis
cussion by Dr. George E.
Moore, a cancer expert from
Buffalo, who described this
remark able immunity of
many human bodies to the
growth of cancer cells. He
spoke of the many persons
with scattered cancer who
just do no succumb to it. He
reminded his . hearer of those
many cases in which a person
becomes ill with scattered
cancer 15 or 20 years after
the original growth was re
moved. Doctors Impressed
One then wonders why the
bad cells had slumbered all
that time. Also, in hundreds
of cases we doctors are im
pressed by the fact that when
the main growth is removed
the daughter growths are un
able to go on developing.
They have lost their power to
conquer the body.
Curiously, if a surgeon cuts
off a bit of a person's cancer
and transplants it under his
skin somewhere it usually
fails to grow. This shows that
the body is able strongly to
resist cancer. Doubtless, one
of these days, chemists will
make for us a drug which
will greatly step up this
natural Immunity.
In the meantime, many a
cancer patient should take
comfort in the fact that even
when all of a growth could
not be removed, he still has
a chance of being one of those
persons who docs not suc
cumb. Dr. Alvarez' booklet on

Jobs Increase by
110,000 in July
Washington - WPD - The
number of jobs held by Amer
icans Increased by 110,000 in
July to a new record high of
68.689.000, t h e government
reported Wednesday Unem
ployment fell by 406,000 to
4,017,000.
The Labor Department said
the July Job total eclipsed by
nearly 900,000 the previous
record set a year ago of 67,
694.000. The department said that
joblessness among adults rose
by nearly 150,000 in July be
cause of further cutbacks In
the hard hit steel Industry
and layoffs in auto plants due
to model changeovers.
But this was offset by the
fact that nearly 300.000 per
sons left the labor market and
stopped looking for work. Un
employment also dropped as
vacationing school-age young
sters found jobs.
Denmark Free of
Paralytic Polio
So Far This Year
Copenhagen-tScience Services-Denmark
has had no
cases of paralytic polio so far
in 1960. Yet, no one knows
how long the polio virus vac
cine protection will last, Dr.
Herdis von Magnus of the En
tero.virus Division of Statens
Seruminstitut.
Dr. von Magnus, who was
responsible for all the polio
vaccine made and used in
Denmark, told Science Serv
ice that about 2,500,000 per
sons of the 4,500,000 popula
tion of Denmark have been
vaccinated with a Salk-type
inactivated, or killed, polio
vaccine.
Number of Difficulties
She said there are a num
ber of difficulties in predict
ing the duration of the im
munity from the vaccine:
1. The polio vaccines have
differed greatly in antigen
icity from batch to batch and
from year to year.
2. The immunization sched
ules used have varied from
time to time and from one
country to another.
3. T h e antibody response
and the duration of immunity
vary considerably in different
persons, even when the same
vaccine is used.
4. The bulk of data on the
decline in immunity level
comes from studies in school
children whose immune re
sponse diners irom mai oi
adults.
For these reasons, she said.
many more studies must De
made before the duration of
immunity from polio vaccine
can be predicted.
Little Actually Known
She added that little is ac
tually known about the dura
tion of immunity in humans
after the use of any virus vac
cine, live or inactivated. Live
virus vaccines like smallpox
and yellow fever vaccine have
been seen as ideal vaccines
producing life-long protection.
Yet, even now, exact knowl
edge of these vaccines is lack
ing. Dr. von Magnus said the
vaccination program in Den
mark began in 1955. Today
90 per cent of the population
under the age of 40 has been
vaccinated against polio.
Most persons have been vac
cinated three times, free of
charge.
Last year, in 1959, a fourth
vaccination was offered free
to those of the population un
der 18 years of age. Eighty
ner cent of those under 18
got this fourth vaccination
