Washington -tUPU- The Sen
ate tackled a key election
year issue today a Democratic-sponsored
bill to in
crease the minimum wage
from $1 to $1.25 an hour.
Democratic p r e s i dential
nominee John F. Kennedy
(Mass.), chief sponsor of the
labor-backed measure, opened
debate Wednesday night, de
claring that it was "vitally
important at this session."
Early opposition was ex
pected to come from Sen,
Barry Goldwatcr (R-Ariz.),
arch conservative, who
warned he would call up a se
ries of amendments to drasti
cally trim the scope of the
bill.
The minimum wage hike,
one of the planks in the Demo
cratic Party platform, has
been listed as "must" legisla
tion by Senate leaders for pas
sage In the post-convention
session of Congress.
Backers made no forecasts
on when a final vote might
come.' But Kennedy's vice
presidential running mate,
Democratic Leader Lyndon
B. Johnson (Tex.), notified the
Senate that no roll call votes
were scheduled until Friday.
In addition to calling for a
step-up increase in the mini
mum wage to $1.25, the bill
also would extend coverage
under the wage-hour act to
4,971,000 new workers.

Washington (UPD The par
ents of captured U2 spy pilot
Francis G. Powers planned to
fly to Moscow today. They
had a promise from Vice
President Nixon to do all he
could to obtain justice in the
airman's espionage trial.
The pilot's attractive bru
nette wife, meantime, sched
uled a news conference, pre
sumably to discuss the Rus
sians' refusal to grant visas to
her mother and her mother's
doctor to go with her to Mos
cow for Powers' Aug. 17 trial.
Powers' wife, Barbara, her
mother, Mrs. Monteen Brown,
and the doctor had reserva
tions to leave New York
City's Idlewild Airport
Wednesday night. But the re
servations were cancelled be
cause the mother and physi
cian had not received visas.
Sabena Airlines reported in
New York that the reserva
tions had been shifted to a
flight Friday night.
The U2 pilot's parents
Oliver Powers, a Norton, Va.,
shoemaker, and his wife, who
suffers from heart trouble
were scheduled to leave New
York for Moscow by jet air
liner with a stop-over in Lon
don. They were accompanied
by a doctor and Sol W. Cury,
a neighbor.
The father told Nixon
Wednesday that the U.S. gov
ernment had not done enough
to help his son defend himself
from spy charges. The pilot's
wife had made ' a similar
charge earlier.
The elder Powers also told
Nixon that Russia broke a
standing agreement with the
United States when it refused
to allow his son to choose his
own defense counsel.
The shoemaker went to the
vice president's office with
Rep. Walter H. Judd (R
Minn.). They said Nixon pro
mised to do "all he could" to
obtain justice in the case.
For one thing, they said.
Nixon promised to forward
the father's complaints to the
"proper authorities." They
declined to say whether this
would include President
Eisenhower.
Nixon wished the father
"God-speed" on his trip to
Russia, shook his hand warm
ly and said:
"My best wishes to you.
You've got a lot of people be
hind you so keep your spirits
up."
Powers said he asked Judd
to accompany him to Nixon's
office because he was so im
pressed with the congress
man's keynote address at the
GOP national convention.
The U2 pilot will go on trial
next week on charges that he
violated Soviet airspace to
gather aerial information
about Russian rocket bases,
radar networks and other
military installations.
His high-flying U2 jet was
forced down in Russia May 1,
and he was captured un
harmed. ' The Russians have said
Powers confessed to the es
sence of spying charges. But
the U.S. State Department ex
pressed belief he made the
statement only after he had
been brainwashed.
Prisoners Freed
By Lock Specialist
Pittsburgh, N. Y. - A lock
specialist was called to the
new Clinton county jail to
release seven prisoners who
had been trapped in their
cells for more than 24 hours.
The Decatur Iron and Steel
Corp. of Decatur, Ala., sent
one of its men to repair the
faulty mechanism. The doors
had remained closed for more
than a day after the automatic
lock system broke down.
The prisoners received their
meals through the bars. A
jailer shoved the plates to
them with a stick across a
seven-foot recreation area.
It took two hours for the
specialist to locate the diffi
culty. The prisoners said they
enjoyed their one day off from
work but missed their exer-
