ment in baseball but who can
deny a tip of the old chapeau
. today to vets like Ted Wil
liams, Stan Musial, Curt Sim
mons and Luis Arroyo?
All four were considered
just about washed up when
the season started but now
Williams has reached another
home run milestone, Musial
and Simmons are playing ma
jor roles in the St. Louis Car
dinals' astonishing rise to pen
nant contention, and Arroyo
is tne lifesaver of the New
York Yankee bullpen.
Here's how the four old
pros showed the young 'uns
how to do it in Tuesday night's
major league action:
VWilliams, 41, tied Mel Ott
for third place in the all-time
home run race when he hit
the 511th of his brilliant ca
reer in the Boston Red Sox'
6-3 loss to the Cleveland In
dians. -Musial, 30, figured in three
runs with two doubles and a
sacrifice fly in' the first game
and Simmons, 31, pitched a
five-hitter as the Cardinals
whipped the Phillies, 5-4 and
6-0, to move into second place
in the National league.
-Arroyo, 33, turned in his
sixth straight fine relief job
to gain credit for the Yan
kees' 7-4, eight-inning triumph
over the Chicago White Sox.
The win boosted , the Yankees'
American league lead to 1V4
games.
Pirates Beat Cubs
The Baltimore Orioles beat
the Detroit Tigers, 3-0, and
the Kansas City Athletics beat
the Washington Senators, 8-3,
after a 3-1, 12th-ining loss, in
other American league games,
while the Pittsburgh Pirates
topped the Chicago Cubs, 7-1,
and the Los Angeles Dodgers
shaded the Milwaukee Braves,
3-2, in other National league
action. San Francisco at Cin
cinnati was rained out.
Williams hit his 19th homer
of this season off Jim Perry,
who went on to win his 14th
game for the Indians. The
blow by Williams, who is
hitting .305 this year, sailed
far over the 380-foot mark
in Cleveland stadium and pro
duced a 3-3 tie in the fourth
inning. Only Babe Ruth, with
714, and Jimmy Foxx, with
534, hit more homers than
Williams, whose heroics were
negated by a two-run homer
and a run-producing double
by Vic Power.
Musial, who lifted his aver
age to .291, doubled and scor
ed in both the sixth and eighth
Innings to help relief ace Lin
dy McDaniel raise his record
to 9-3. Then Simmons, a sore
arm case for several years,
topped his ex - Philadelphia
teammates for the third time
to complete the sweep and
give the Cardinals four
straight victories and 151 in
their last 14 games.

night's Pacific Coast league
play. The Padre righthander
held Seattle to four hits, but
the Rainiers, notching their
fifth in a row, got a pair of
unearned runs to take a 2-1
decision.
Jersey City of the Interna
tional league three weeks ago,
shut out the White Sox for
l'A innings to win his first
game for the Yankees. The
Yankees pushed over three
runs in the eighth inning with
the aid of errors by Joe Gins
berg and Roy Sievers with the
bases filled and the game was
called after the' White Sox'
eighth because of a sudden
rainstorm.
Brooks Robinson's three-run
fourth inning homer and
Chuck Estrada's four-hit pitch
ing gave the Orioles their
fourth straight victory and
ninth in 10 games. It was the
12th win against six losses for
Estrada, who handed Frank

Harmon Killebrew's two
run 12th inning homer en
abled Ray Moore to win his
fourth game for the Senators
but the Athletics took the sec
ond game as Don Larsen, re

for the Indians and racked
up his 10th win with an eight-

Bill Causion paced Port

by driving in four runs with

Mike Baxes chipped in with
a solo homer for the Beavers
while Bobby Prescott did the
same for the Giants.
Glenn McMinn, reliever
turned starter, went the route

The fact that the Dodgers
are in fourth place in the Na
tional League, seven games
behind the front-running Pitts
burgh Pirates who seem to do
no wrong, doesn't deter Moon
one bit.
"There's still a third of the
season to go, and we're not
hopelessly behind like some
of those second-division
clubs," Moon told newsmen
Tuesday before the Dodgers
clobbered the Milwaukee
Braves 3-2, causing them to
drop into third place behind
the St. Louis Cardinals..

"When things looked bad
for us in the late goina last
year I insisted we'd win, and
i say now that we'll repeat,"
Moon said. "We don't have
the one big slugger like an
Hank Aaron, a Willie Mays or
a r,rnie isaKs, but our pitch,
ing will carry us throueh.
"There isn't another club in
the league that can throw one
good pitcher after another at
you day after day. Even when
our aces get trumped, we've
got pitchers who can make up
lost ground," Moon concluded.
SF Giants
Lambasted

Cincinnati -IUP1)- The San
Francisco Giants found out
Tuesday night that when it
rains: it pours.
Their game with Cincinnati
was rained out-so manager
Clancy Sheehan gathered his
slumping charges in the club
house and really poured it on.
"They play as though
they've never been in a ball
park before," Sheehan told
newsmon. "They throw to
wrong bases, miss cutoff men
-or hit them when thev
shouldn't. And their base
running-well, just say I be
lieve it leaves a little bit to
be desired."
The manager warned his
players that they miEht suffer
a financial slump if they don't
snap out of the playina habits
that have resulted in eight
losses and one victory on the
present road trip. ,
He said the players would
get news from the 1961 pay
master, "none of it good," at
contract time unless they start
winning.

day in preparation for Satur
day's 13th annual Shriners'
hospital football game at
Multnoamh stadium. And for

DeSylvia, Jefferson high
school football coach, said his
squad was "looking a lot bet
ter and singled out blocking
as one of the most improved
parts ,of the Metropolitan
team's game.

team was "coming around."

Lanny Myers of St. Helens
and fullback Mike Walsh of
Lincoln high school of Port
land have been pressing hard
for starting backfield positions.
Adding lustre to the State
offense in recent sessions has

Jones, a center, have been
impressive in workouts.
