racing is over. Now all that's
needed to find out who won
the Seattle Seafair Trophy
Race is a decision from the
American Powerboat Associ
ation. Miss Thriftway, driven by
Bill Muncey, ended the event
for unlimited hydroplanes late
Monday by winning the de
layed re-run of the final heat.
But it didn't prove a thing.
'Pep Pill Charge Termed
'Sour Grapes'

women used "pep pills" dur
ing last week's Olympic swim
ming trials was dismissed

Several of the west coast's
fastest dragsters will high
light competition on the com
ing week end at the White
City drag strip.
Racing will be conducted
all day on both Saturday and
Sunday, Aug. 13 and 14. It
will be the second annual Big
Gasser under sponsorship of
the Southern Oregon Timing
association.
The Glass Slipper, fiber
glass speedster from Sacra
mento, Calif, will be on hand
gunning for a new strip rec
ord and the $175 savings
bond riding on this mark.
Driver Ed Cortapassi will
have to get his powerful su
percharged Chevrolet-powered
machine up to a speed of
at least 145.63 miles per hour
to qualify for the record and
bond,
Should he be able to do
this then he must record a
faster time than any of the
other top contenders who may
also break the existing mark.
Cortapassi and co - owner
Doug Butler presently hold
the track record for dragsters
burning special "fuel." They
set a trap time of 160.87 mph
through the one-fourth mile
run when they were here last
September. This time they
will be using regular gasoline.

Holder of many records for
both beauty and perform

cently won honors at the
Great Western drag meet held
in Reno, Nevada. The team of
Cortapassi and Butler emerg
ed as top gas class eliminator
of the two-day silver state

starting "A" class dragster
owned by Chuck Blanchard
of Beaverton, Oregon and
Wave Skeans from Vancou
ver, Wash.
Presently the outstanding
gasoline-powered acceleration
machine in the northwest, this
vehicle has gained a top
speed of 153 mph in just 9.4
seconds on Washington drag
strips.
It was Dave Skeans behind
the wheel of his "A" modified
roadster who outran Blan
chards "B" class dragster for
top eliminator laurels at the
Memorial day meet held last
May at the White City strip.

but the final heat, although
started twice, didn't get into
the record books until Mon
day. It was halted both times
because of accidents on the
Lake Washington course.

stop heat three the first time.

Lodges Protest

pep pills were found in the
women's locker room after
last week's trials in Detroit.
Miss Voii Saltza was ao
cused indirectly of using pills
when Ruuska said some of the
girls "were swimming 30 sec
onds faster than their best
previous times." Miss Von
Saltza set a record of 4:44.5
in the 400 meters.
Ruuska's daughter, Sylvia,
qualified for the 400-meter
swim but another daughter,
Pat, failed to make the team.
Walt Schlueter, coach of
the Multnomah Athletic club
of Portland which was one of
the clubs accused by Ruuska,
said the charge "is simply
ridiculous and silly. '

Sign-up of entries for two
golf tournaments Is being
urged by officials at Rogue
Valley Country club.
One event is the junior club
championship meet and the
other is the annual Father
and Son tourney.
Filing of entries has been
slow for the junior tussle and
registration at the pro shop
right away is asked. The
tournament is billed for Mon
day and Tuesday, Aug. 15 and
16. There will be 18 holes of
medal play each day. Com
petition ' will be in junior
boys', boys', pee wee and
girls' division.
The Father and Son will be
on Sunday, Aug. 21. There
will be a 9 a.m. breakfast.
Pairings and starting times
will be determined at 10 a.m.
Dick and Rich Knight have
taken the low gross crown for
the past two seasons. Bill and

Martin, fistic artist of the Cin
cinnati Reds, is to meet with
National League President
Warren Giles today to tell his
side of the Martin-Jim Brewer
scuffle last week in Chicago.
The Reds' second baseman,
whose on and off-the-field ca
pers are well known in both
the American and National
leagues, slugged Brewer of the
Chicago Cubs, claiming Brew
er deliberately threew at his

Giles handed Martin a $500
fine and five-day suspension.

Stagg To Be Awarded
Medal On His Birthday

Spokane averaged 101.963
mph. Miss Seattle Too came in
third, Miss Burien, fourth,

loop - which is just a nice
way of saying they wound up

ing bails and strikes, Man
ager Casey Stengel of the
New York Yankees charged
today.
"I'd like to see them lake
movies of the pitches, lie
said, "and at the end of the
season, check them over just
to see how accurate they are.
I'll bet they'd know then
which were good umpires and
which weren't.
Stengel, whose team Mon
day night lost 9-1 to the White
Sox, wouldn't recommend use
of an "electric eye" for spot
umpiring during a game.
But he said the American
and National leagues should
get together to straighten out
the interpretations so that
both loops would have the
same kind of umpiring.
We play all season in the
American League with the
umpires working behind the
plate, and we get in the World
Series and the All-Star games
and get National League umps
who work , at the side of the
plate.
If they work one place or
another in the minor leagues
and come up, then they've got
to change. I should think that
somewhere in baseball
there'd be somebody smart
enough to straighten this out
so we all have the same um
