San Francisco - (UPD - Dr.l

Socialite Faces
Trial in Slaying
Of Talt Relative
Pasadena. Calif. - tUPD -
socialite goes on trial today
on a charge of murdering her
husband William H. Taft,
distant relative of President
William Howard Taft.
Mrs. Martha Ann Taft, 30
entered a dual plea of inno
cent and innocent by reason
of insanity to the April 21
slaying. She had admitted in
a "suicide" note crushing his
head with a hammer.
Taft, 38, a missile executive
with Aerojet - General Corp.,
was beaten to death while he
slept in the couple's fashion
able home.
Suicide Attempted
Mrs. Taft had slashed her
wrists and gulped a large dose
of pills after the slaying. She
was hospitalized several
weeks recuperating.
In a six-page note she left,
she told of getting out of bed
in the middle of the night
after they had quarreled bit
terly over whether she was
faithful.
"I got a hammer and hit
him over and over and over'
the note said.
Defense Argument
"Forgive me for the terrible
thing I have done, I must have
been out of my mind."
The defense was expected
to argue in the trial that Mrs.
Taft was driven into a state of
temporary insanity by what
she claimed to be Taft's ex
cessive jealousy and charges
she was unfaithful.

Custom officials asked Dr.
Moore if she was carrying any
fruits or vegetables, importa
tion of which is prohibited
into California. She said she
wasn't - but officers found
oranges, tomatoes, cucumbers,
bananas and passion fruit
among her belongings.
When officials explained the
food would have to be con
fiscated - and said there was
no provision by which they
could replace it with locally
produced fruits and vege
tables Dr. Moore began
hurling her supply about the
building.
'Had Enough'
She then refused to con
tinue her trip to London via
New York City, maintaining
that she had "had enough" of
American officialdom.
Qantas Airlines solved the
impasse by promising . Dr
Moore transportation today to
Los Angeles, where she can
catch a polar flight to London
- and by-pass customs in New
York.
The airline also provided
her with a basket of American-approved
fruit to sustain
her on the flight.
