Hie Census Bureau report
ed today that 1D80 census re
sults suggest a nationwide
population density of 50.4 per
sons per square miles, down
fractionally from the 50.7 re
ported in 1950.
These figures are computed
by dividing the total popula
tion by the number of states.
By states, population density
varies greatly-from New Jer
sey's 800.2 people per square
mile to Alaska's one person
for every 2VS square miles.
From 1950 to 1960 popula
tion and population density
went up in 45 of the 48 states
Alaska and Hawaii. But
bringing in Alaska's 571,065
square miles last year when
it became a state held the na
tional average of population
density down to the 1950
level. Although Alaska is
first in size it is last in popu
lation with 224,386 residents.
Hawaii has 6,412 square
miles and a population of
620,385, for a density rating
of 96.8-above ' the national
average.

field said Thursday that the
turnover of state employees
has become so great and the
recruitment of replacements
in many categories so dififcult
that the state finance director
has been asked to find out
what savings are available in
slate agency budgets that
could be used lo hige emploee
.salaries. Melvin Cleveland,
Oregon Civil Service director,
told the governor the com
petitive salary situation is
"critical."
Hatfield said a recommenda
tion may be made to the state
emergency board at its meet
ing next month.
Legislature Blamad
Hatfield said it was "the
failure of the 1959 legislature
to provide adequate funds for
salary adjustments" which has
placed the slate in a position
where "it cannot compete for
competent employees on the
labor market."
Slate governmep' he said,
has become a "costly training
ground" for prospective em
ployees of private business.
During the past year, 45.8
per cent of the state's junior
typists and 49.9 per cent of
its junior stenographers re
signed. This must be curtailed, Hat
field said.
The Oregon Civil Service
Commission is now studying
salaries paid in private busi
ness and other public catego
ries prior to preparing recom
mended salary adjustments to
be included in Hatfield's budg
et for the 1961-63 biennium.
Two Arrested For
Attempted Forgery
Medford police arrested
two men Wednesday on a
charge of attempting lo ut
ter and publish a false check.
The men allegedly tried to
pass a $25 check at a local
stoic.
Arrested are Jagat Aara
yen, 21, Robinson hotel, and
Kloyd Elmer Barrow, 21, of
33 South Front st. They have
been confined in the county
jail.
Police arrested the two aft
er the store manager report
ed that Barrow tried to cash
a $25 check for which he had
no funds in the bank.
On questioning, Barrow Im
plicated Narayen, who, he
said, actually wrote the check.
Narayen is also wanted in
Yuba City, Calif., on a check
charge, police said, and may
be wanted by federal author
ities for income tax evasion,
they added.
Police also cleared the
theft of three rings with the
arrest. Sandra Mae Palmer,
17 Corning court, told police
Wednesday that three rings
valued at $150 were taken
from her residence. Police
found two of the rings nn Bar
row's person.

Washington, D.C. - Poor
spelling can pull down your
child's grades in social studies,
reading, science, and other
school subjects, according to
the nation s elementary school
teachers.
Many teachers mark down
book reports, project note
books, and test papers because
tliey contain spelling and
grammatical errors.

Learning to spell English
is hard work," according to
the National Education Asso
ciation, in its booklet "How
To Help Your Child Learn."
"Johnny would have an easier
time of it with Spanish or
Finnish, which are far more
consistent in their rules."
Concentrate on List
Most schools concentrate on
teaching children a list of
about 3,000 English root
words that make up 98 per
cent of the words both adults
and children use in written
expression. About 20 per cent
of these words don't follow
the regular alphabetical rules,
and these are probably the
ones that give a child trouble.
There are ways. sui?ffpstri
by the NEA, in which parents !
can neip uieir children im
prove in spelling. Among
them are:
First, make sure your child
has no physical handicaps
which may be holding him
back-a speech defect, faulty
hearing, or poor vision. If you
suspect anything of the sort,
have him examined immedi
ately. Have him make his own dic
tionary of "demon" words that
plague him. Get hiiri a scrap
book and have him devote one
page to each alphabetical let
ter. As he masters the "de
mon," he enters it on the
proper page.
Give your child the fun of
adventuring with words. En
courage him to make a list of
new and interesting ones he !
comes across. Play games gjth
words.
Frequent Notes
Encourage him to write fre
quent notes-to other children,
to relativcs-as thank-you's for
parties and Sifts. Check with
him to see Oiat all words are
spelled properly, and that the
note is legible.
Give him his own diction
ary. He will use it faithfully,
if you give him the good ex
ample of "looking up" the
spelling of words.
Avoid "baby talk" with
your preschooler or first
grader. It may be great fun
for parents and doting uncles,
but it's no help to your child
in tlx real life of school.
Marine Board Has
Unclaimed Licenses
Salem - The state marine
board has reported it has ac
cumulated a file of boat li
censes that have been return
ed because of insufficient ad
dress or which have been un
claimed. The marine board also is
holding a number of applica
tions 'or boat documents
which it cannot process due
to the applicants having failed
to indicate any address what
soever, or else only a partial
address.
"Where possible, the board
traces the name of the appli
cant through the help of boat
dealers or by searching
through telephone and city di
rectories," R. F. Rittenhouse,
director of the board, stated.
"However, there remains
quite a few applications from
people who we have been un
able to locate through any
channel and we can only hope
that they will become con
cerned about their boat li
censes and contact us," he
added.
Teen-Ager Beats Up
Portland Man, 72
Portland -(UPB- Chris John
son, 72, told attendants at
Emanuel hospital Wednesday
afternoon, that he had been
beaten up by a teen-age boy
Monday night.
According to a hospital re
port Johnson did not give the
name of the youth but said
he was about 17 years old.
Police did not receive a report
of the incident until Thurs

ual decline in general eco
nomic activity.
One of the few in the na
tion to suggest an unfavorable
outlook six months ago, the
firm had this to say about the
future:
"While business will in
time recover, there is little
reason to assume that confi
dence as reflected by increas
ed orders, production, and in
turn, profits can be revital
ized quickly."
But, it points out, it is clear
that neither reversing or de
clining markets eliminate the
possibility of building up cap
ital values. "Even in the vola
tile and eyelical markets,
there are opportunities for
worthwhile investment appre
ciation." Bache & Co. says Upjohn
appears poised for a resump
tion of the upward move.
During its recent reaction, the
firm adds, the issue managed
to hold its ground and has
been receiving increased sup
port during the past few ses

covery from the depression
