on epilepsy by Drs. Donald
W. Mulder, David D. Daly, Jo
seph G. Rush
ton, and Rob
ert E. Yoss.
They review
ed the records
pt 1,284 con
secutive pati
ents seen with
epilepsy at the
Mayo Clinic
during 1954.

is the fact that 19 per cent
of these people had made a
better -than -average adjust
ment to life. Some 68 per cent
were self-supporting; 8.7 per
cent were partially dependent
on someone, and only 4 per.
cent were totally dependent.
The doctors found that 46.5
per cent of the patients had
less than four attacks a year;
27.3 per cent had less than
four attacks a month; and the
rest had somewhere around
four attacks a week. Usually,
inherited epilepsy shows up
in children before they are
10 years of age. Eplepsy that
comes in later life is more
likely to be due to a brain
tumor, an attack of brain
f a v e r, or arteriosclerotic
changes in the brain.
As the doctors wisely say,

or stand unconscious for a
few seconds; many have queer
"tizzies", or attacks of rage
which commonly are not rec
ognized by them or their phy
sicians as attacks of epilepsy.
This is one big reason why
so many people, when they
come to a doctor with early
epilepsy, are sure that there
never was a case of the dis
ease in their family. Usually
in these cases, when I spend
considerable time with the
parents or uncles or aunts or
in-laws of the patient, and
make friends with them, I
learn of one or more relatives
who had a violent temper, or
occasionally a "nervous break
down," or "odd spells", the
nature of which was never
determined. Perhaps the moth
er "fainted easily." Sometimes
I can tell from the history
that a relative's speels repre
sented an atypical, or a
"psycho-motor" or a psychic
epilepsy. Often I can be sure
that a relative is epileptic
by getting his electroencephal
ograms made. In them I will
see the typical spikes and
"seizure discharges." As yet,
most of the available statistics
in regard to the heredity of
epilepsy are of little value
because the investigators asK
ed only about fits, and paid
no attention to the many
cases in which relatives had
a iitiess or minor lorm ui
epilepsy.

based launching pad Thurs
day. It was the fourth Polaris
firing in six days.
The 28-foot rocket streaked
from the pad in a test of new
equipment in its second slago,
The Polaris darted into a
bank of clouds about 45 sec
onds after blast-off. Its boost
er stage was supposed to drop
away at the 55-second mark
and the second stage lake over

The Polaris proved in a
series of four launchings from
submerged submarines in the
past two weeks that it is near
