Small Children Who Bang
Their Heads on "Hock"
Many parents are much
iW.zled when a child starts
banging his head against the
side of his crib or perhaps
starts rocking back and forth,
coming down hard, hitting his
heels with his buttocks. . The
people wonder why the child
is behaving In such a peculiar
manner, and they wonder
what will be the outcome. Is
the habit dangerous? Will the
child get over it? I know that
years ago when a couple of
my grandchildren developed
these habits, I asked some of
the leading pediatricians in
the United States about them,
and -no one was able to tell
me anything except thnt the
child would almost certainly
outgrow the trick without any
bad results remaining. And
this is what happened.
I was just reading an article
by Drs. M. Kravitz, V. Rosen
thal, Zelda Teplitz, John B.
Murphy and R. E. Lesser, of
the University of Illinois
(Chicago) and the St. Francis
Hospital of Evanston, Illinois.
They studied 135 "head-bangers."
They say that the small
child who keeps striking his
head against something out
grows the practice without in
jury to his brain. A neuro
logic or psychiatric examina
tion is advisable only if the
child keeps up the habit after
the age of three years. Then,
the use of a sedative or a
tranquilizer might help.
The child is usually a boy
and the first-born in the fam
ily. He begins banging at
about 8 months of age, and
continues until ho is about 17
months old. If he is a "rocker"
he seems half-awake. If he is
a head-banger he does not
seem to be bothered by any
pain. He doesn t have temper
tantrums, and he is not a
thumb-sucker. These infants
often show musical ability
earlier than do most children.
The elcctrocncephalo grams
show no abnormality in the
brain. The head -banging or
rocking certainly does not
seem to be a device lo get
attention. As I said, when I
have watched such children 't
seemed to me that they were
half-aslccp. They did not no
tice me when I came into the
room and stood, studying
what ;'ioy were doing.
Drugs That Lessen Appetite
I was just reading a state
ment by Dr. C. F. Gastineau,
of the Mayo Clinic, made in
answer to a question someone
asked him about the drugs
that take away some of the
appetite of stout persons. He
said there Is a family of drugs
related to dextroamphetamine
In their chemical structure.
All have some effect, and it
is hard to say which is the
best of the lot. Most of these
drugs have the disadvantage
that they make many a pa
tient restless and sleepless
hence they are best taken in
the morning. If taken late
in the day, they are likely to
produce insomnia. Personally,
when am reducing weight, I
like to depend on diet alone
If I were depending on diet
plus a drug, if I cheated a bit
and ate more than I should

In the April statistical Bul
letin of the Metropolitan Life
Insurance company I read
some figures obtained a while
ago by the Society of Actuar
ies. Unfortunately, the statis
tics are based only on exper
ience with men, but the
authors say that what mor
tality experience they have
had with women is similar to
that of men. The important
point is that when stout men
reduce and get down to norm
al, their mortality rate is even
less than normal. For in
stance, in a group of men
who had been 35 to 40 per
cent overweight and who,
later, when they had reduced,
were accepted for insurance,
the final mortality rate was
96 per cent of the average. In
the cases of men who remain
ed overweight the mortality
was 151 per cent.

Children Who Kill
Recently, Dr. Lauretta
Bender, of the Creedmor
State hospital of New York,
made a study of 33 boys and
girls who killed someone be
fore they were 16. As the
doctor says, in mast of these
cases psychiatrists had warn
ed that the child would prob
ably kill, but no one paid any
attention. Several of the chil
dren had an abnormal electro
encelphalogrnm sugges ting
epilepsy; several were schizo
phrenic, some were antisocial
and paranoid (thinking people
were going harm to them), a
few were "firebugs"; some
were mentally retarded, and
some had a bad home. Several
appeared to have an abnormal
brain. One great trouble to
day is that in most states there
is no place 'in which a psycho
tic child can be taken care of,
Often the authorities are un
able to do anything until the
child murders someone; they
have to wait patiently for
that. Then they can act!

resort late Tuesday threaten
ed today to put a damper on
President Eisenhower's vaca
tion fun.
The weather bureau said
fog and low lying clouds prob
ably would hang over the
President's summer headquar
ters - and the Newport Coun
try Club golf course-through
the morning, with nothing
much better in prospect this
afternoon.
Narragansett bay was so
fogged in late Tuesday that
the President had to forego
the usual boat ride from his
quarters to his office and
back, and made the several-
mile trip through Newport
auto traffic instead.
