Dodgers Say 'Beanball'
Accusations Result From
Red Feud With Arbiters
By ALEX KAHN
Los Angeles OJTD - The Dod
gers claimed today that 8
feud between the Cincinnati
ball club and National league
umpires was responsible (or
charges that Los Angeles
pitchers were throwing "bean'
balls."
Vice President Fresco
Thompson made the claim in
answer to charges by Cincin
nati General manager Gabe
Paul to League President
Warren Giles that Dodger
pitchers were deliberately
throwing at his players.
Paul claimed the "planned
program of beanball throw
ing" grew out of the injury
May 2 to Dodger pitcher Rog
er Craig who was spilled at
the plate by Cincinnati out
fielder Vada Pinson and suf
fered a fractured collarbone
Pinion Spikes Sherry
The feud continued Thurs
day night when Pinson spiked
Dodger pitcher Larry Sherry
as he covered first base for
a putout on a grounder in
the ninth inning.
1 thought Pinson went out
of his way to spike me,"
Sherry said after the game.
We've got a lot of hard-ball
pitchers who can be pretty
mean too."

MARTY BHILL IMPROVES
Los Angeles IUPD - Marty
Brill, a former Notre 'Dame
football player, showed slight
improvement today following
a serious kidney operation at
St. Vincent's hospital. Brill,
a great blocking back under
Knute Rockne at Notre Dame
in the early 30s, was in good
health until a week ago when
it was discovered he had
stones in both kidneys.

"With as little success as
we have been having against

are doing it certainly has not
been too effective," Thomp
son said, noting that the Reds
going into Thursday night
had a 7-5 seasonal edge over
the Dodgers.
"More seriously, Cincinnati

Geiger Lost
To Boston
For Season
By DICK DEW
Boston (UPO - The "help
wanted" sign was hanging in
right field at Fenway Park
again today after the Red
Sox lost for the season the
newest of their most promis
ing young men.
Outfielder Gary Gelger
was hospitalized Thursday
with a collapsed lung. The
24-year-old converted pitch
er was stricken at the height
of his campaign to become
an entirely acceptable re
placement for the retired
Jackie Jensen, Geiger's pred
ecessor in right field.
Search for F.fplacemani
The Red Sox were expect
ed to stage a quick beating
of the bushes in search of
another outfielder since Gei
ger s loss slashed Bostons
outer garden staff to just
four, one of them the aging
nonetheless still powerful -
Ted Williams.
In addition, Geiger's ail
ment deprived Manager Mike
Higgins of perhaps his most
promising young player, at
least next to pitcher Bill Mon-
bouquette. Geiger, who was
in his second season with
Boston after a year with
Cleveland as both a pitcher
and outfielder, only Tuesday
hiked his batting average to
.301.
But less than 24 hours aft
er getting a home run and a
single and drawing three
walks to achieve .300 for the
first time, Geiger underwent
surgery and was ruled out for
the remainder of the season.
Speculation on the reason
behind the ailment centered
on a wayward pitch by the
veteran Chicago White Sox
pitcher Early Wynn in Tues
day night's game.

Berra and Bobby Richardson
each had two hits as the Yan
