Actor Ward Bond Blasts
Appearance of 'The Clan'
At Democratic Convention
By VERNON SCOTT
UPI Hollywood
CorrtipomUnt
f Hollywood - (UPI) - The Re
publican National Convention
.was considerably less festoon
ed with movie stars than the
Democratic conclave, and out
spoken Ward Bond thinks it's
better that way.
The star of television's
"Wagon Train" series blasted
Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra,
Tony Curtis, Sammy Davis
Jr. and other members of
tinsel town's "clan" for their
-Appearances at the Democratic
Convention here two weeks
.ago.
I think they will lose votes
for Senator Kennedy," said
one-time Republican Bond.
;. "Those people have never
"said or done anything politi
cally. And as far as I know
'.they've never worked in a
political campaign. Yet, when
the TV cameras panned the
"convention, there they were
ubig as life."
Dissatisfied With 'Clan'
- Bond snorted his dissatis
faction wth the "clan."
" "They all got into the act
because their buddy, Peter
'Lawford, is Kennedy's broth-er-in-law.
"So what? Does that mean
"Sinatra is going to be secre
Mary of state or that Sammy
"Davis will be secretary of the
;nterior.
t "In the long run I think
rtiiey'll hurt Kennedy's
-chances."
- Does this mean Bond ob
jects to movie and TV per
formers expressing their po
litical beliefs?
"Absolutely not," he said. "I
think It is the duty of enter
"tamers to speak up on politics
more so than anyone else.
We should stand up and be
counted as to how we stand
"in regard to this country of
"ours.
T "But that is something dif
ferent from showing up at a
"convention where we aren't
doing anything constructive.
-Can Caui Trouble
t "I know speaking your mind
- can cause trouble. It hurt me
in this town about 12 years
;. ago when the trend was pret
;'ty far to the left."
: How does Bond stand when
It comes to politics?
'.. "I'm not too happy with
; either candidate," he said.
"Today's politicians are more
-, anxious to win votes and to
:. get Into office than to take
. ' courageous stands for what
they believe.
; "Whether you agreed with
.' them or not, you had to re
. s p e c t Franklin Roosevelt,
f Robert Taft and men like
Teddy Roosevelt. They spoke
their minds even when they
knew what they were saying
'. was unpopular.
"Harry Truman was anoth-
er man who let the chips fall
where they might. His mis
; takes were of commission
' rather than omission.
I "But the men in office to
i day would rather win an elec
'' tion by saying what they think
people want to hear."
"And party platforms don't
