Tic douloureux Is ' one of
the most painful diseases
there is. The patient is usu
ally an elderly woman who,
at intervals and perhaps after
talking a while, will get
series of jabs of pain in one
side of her face. I am ashamed
to say that often, at least In
the past, the first physicians
to see the woman had all of
her good teeth extracted on
the side where her pain was
coming. So far at I know,
such extractions never do any
good.
There are only two meas
ures that can be counted on to
help. One is an injection of
alcohol into the big ganglion
on the Sth cranial nerve. Of
ten, this injection has to be
repeated after some months.
Then, if that does not give
enough relief, an operation
can be performed on the
ganglion. This should, when
ever possible, be performed
by a surgeon who has had
much experience in this field,
and who, hence, knows how
to perform skilfully one of
the newer operations which
is better than the old one.
There is a drug which some
times relieves the pain, but
the experts with whom I have
talked were afraid of it be
cause sometimes it attacks
other nerves, and not the
fifth" one that the doctor
hoped would be thrown out
of action.
Usually, when a person has
a very rare disease, it is a
good idea to go direct to some
great medical center where
one can find several men who
have seen perhaps hundreds
of cases, and hence know all
that is to be known about
the malady. I always much
admire the wise and kindly
physician who, when he sees
a patient with some very rare
disease with wnicn ne nas no
personal experience, immedi
ately sends blm or her to a
man who has had a large ex
perience with It. This is the
finest thing he can do for the
Datient.

Glaucoma
I get many letters from peo
ple who write me about the
possibility of their having
glaucoma. Naturally, all I can
say is "Go to an ophthalmolo
gist and insist on his measur
ing your ocular tension with
the little Instrument that is
available for that purpose."
A person should b particu
larly Insistent on getting sucn
an examination when he Is
getting past 40, and glaucoma
runs through his family.
I was so cheered the other
day when, visiting in a fairly
big city, I chatted with their
leading ophthalmologist. He
said, "You know: when you
have a column in the paper
on glaucoma - that great pro
ducer of blindness - there
must be about 100 people
who, in the next two weeks.
come into my office asking
for a check-up. And, always,
there are some whom I catch
just in time to save them
from serious trouble.

is a growth hormone that can

shund into a great big gigan

What is unfortunate is that
the growth hormone made
from the pituitary glands of
cattle is so different chemical,
ly from that obtained from
man that it won't work on a
boy or a girl. Dr. Li, our great
expert in this field of re
search, with great effort has
made just enough growth hor
mone from the pituitary
gianas oi men to treat - suc
cessfully - a few undeveloped
boys. I talked to some of the
men who have' been doing this
work, and they said that ob
viously they cannot get
enough of the substance from
men and women who come
to autopsy to help many chil
dren. I understand that for
some time now Dr. Li and
his group have been strug
gling so to change the hor
mone taken from cattle that
it will work well when given
to children.
In the meantime some men
have reported encouraging re
sults using a little thyroid
substance, plus some vitamin
B12. But it is almost impos
sible to say if this works be
cause some short boys will
suddenly start to grow when
they are 14 or 15. The oppo
site problem is what to do
with a girl who is growing so
fast that she promises to be a
six-footer. Again, - I do not
know that anyone has come
up with a good treatment. If
I had such a daughter I would
be inclined to ask her to eat
sparingly. I would not stuff
her with vitamins because
some of them favor body
growth. .
