far preferred Goldwater.
Placed In Nomination
One of them, Gov. Paul
Fannin of Arizona, defied the
senator's personal withes and
put him in nomination, lit
said Goldwater had won "the
admiration of America by nil
unswerving willingness to
call a spudc a spade." This
touched off a noisy 12-mlnutt
demonstration.
Four seconding speeches
followed, each praising the
senator at a man of Integrity
totally without fear.
The moment they wort
through, Goldwater appeared
on the speaker's platform. He
withdrew hit nomination,
shushed a chorus of "noes,"
and asked the Arizona dele
gation to cast lit H voles for
Nixon.
Histamine's Role

ed In a research program
which may lead lo a belter
understanding of this tub
stance as it affects health and
disease.
The study It being carried
out under the direction of
Drs. Wlllinm J. Hartman and
William G. Clark of the Uni
versity of California Medical
school, Lot Angeles, and the
Sepulvcda Veterans Admin
istration hospital.
Drs. Hartman and ' Clark
and their group recently dem
onstrated for the first time
that histamine Is produced
normally In human cells by
an enzyme, It had previously
been thought by many to b
produced by Intestinal bac
teria. The researchers used
sterile preparations from
basophils, a kind of white
blood cell, obtained from pa
llet ts with acute myelogenous
loukemia.
Role In Functions
Alhough histamine It Im
pllctod In allergies, acute in
fections and inflammation,
there Is increasing evidence
of lis rolet In normal body
functions, the invosllgatora
point out, These may Include
nerve transmission, brain and
heart functions and produc
tion of gastric secretions. His
tamine may also be Involved
In such growth processes as
development of the foetus in
pregnancy, tissue regenera
tion and wound healing.
The study Is concerned with
how the body produces and
utilizes histamine in its nor
mal processes. It Is also con
cerned with means of block
ing Us production In abnor
mal situations such as aller
gies and Inflnmmalion,
