Crime Prevention Chief
Warns Vacationers of
Summer Hazard Burglaries
Br DOUGLAS GRIPP
United Pioii Inttrnalional
Salem- lUPI) -Summer is a
wonderful time for vacations
and house burglaries. -
. A tough little ex-police
chief from Tillamook with a
Bostonian accent has the job
of letting you know just how
related they are.
He is Philip G. Averill,
43, head of Oregon's new
crime prevention program,
with, the state justice depart
ment in Salem his headquar
ters. Burglars 'Invited' . ,
The point is, many people
"invite" burglars to raid their
homes, especially when they
go on vacation.
Sobering FBI statistics show
that for a six-year period
starting in 1946, in urban
areas Oregon had the fifth
highest burglary rate in the
country per 100,000 popula
tion. On top of this, not all
crimes are reported to police.
' Averill Is a short, solid
man who smokes a pipe and
wears black-rimmed glasses.
Burglary prevention is but
one phase of his work, and
he's just getting his sleeves
rolled up. ;
There are many ways, he
says, In which a vacationer
can unwittingly indicate to a
burglar that the home field
is clear for ripe pickings.
' Among the more obvious
are forgetting to shut off de
liveries of milk, newspapers,
laundry and the like. Admit
tedly, not many people have
memories as bad as that, and
most do these things auto
matically when they go away.
Subtler Hints
But there are subtler hints
that are caught by a crafty
burglar's eye: The growing
length of your uncut lawn;
those circulars that tend to
collect on one's doorstep;
shades that remain down day
and night.
Here are some of the sug
gestions Averill offers if
you're taking a trip:
Notify local police when
and where you're going, who
has the key to your home or
apartment, and when you
will return; check and dou-
Iran Announces
Break With UAR
Tehran - (DTD - I r a n an
nounced Wednesday it has
broken off diplomatic rela
tions with the United Arab
Republic, and ordered the
U.A.F. Ambassador to leave
the country within 24 hours.
The crisis was precipitated
by a speech by U.A.R. Presi
dent Gama: Adbel Nasser who
attacked Iran for granting de
facto recognition to Israel.
Nasser Tuesday night also
announced he was severing
relations with Iran and de
nounced the Shah of Iran for
"betraying" the Arab cause
and "jelling himself cheaply
to imperialism and Zionism."
ble-check that all doors and
windows are tightly locked;
stop all home deliveries.
Have a neighbor pick up
your mail, and papers left by
mistake; have him mow and
water your lawn and even
sweep your sidewalk while
you're gone," then reciprocate.
'Livid In' Appearance
Leave your window shades
up in the usual manner to
give the house a "lived in"
appearance to a stranger on
the outside.
An inexpensive timer is
even suggested, connected to
one or two lamps in the house,
so the lights will go on and
off for certain periods in the
evening.
Another suggestion-and not
likely to make Averill chum
my with society editors-is to
forego tipping your local
newspaper of your Jrip. "Tell
your newspapers about your
trip after you return," says
Averill. "It will still be news
-but not to burglars."
CONTINUE SAME POLICIES
Tokyo-flJPD-Prime Minister
Hayato Ikeda Wednesday told
Koichiro Asakai, Japanese
ambassador to the United
States, to follow the policies
set forth by former Premier
Nobusuke Kishi. Asakai, who
will return to Washington
early next month, received as
surances from Ikeda that Ja
pan would continue its policy
of close ties with the United
States.

Writer Says Ike Could Have Been Renominated, If Not for Constitution
By MERRIMAN SMITH
United Pros Inttrnalional
Chicago - dim - If it were
n't for the 22nd Amendment,
Richard M. Nixon would bo
running for vice president
again and Dwight D. Eisen
hower would be nominated
by the Republicans for a third
term, even at the age of 60.
That, at least, seemed to be
the emotional message the
party sent showering over the
chief executive and his wife,
Mamie, Tuesday night as the
Republican Convention went
on a sentimental binge cheer
ing the man who broke the
Democratic grip on the White
House eight years ago.
Eisenhower was a little
emotional too, as he made his
last appearance as titular
head of the party. There were
tears in his eyes as he thank
ed the delegates in convention
hall tor their thunderous
ovation when he was intro
duced. .
Catch In His Voice
And there was a catch In
his voice as he joined the
delegates In singing "Let Me
Call You Sweetheart" to Ma
mie at the end of the evening.
With the certain' president
ial nomination of Nixon by
the convention tonight, Eisen
hower becomes truly a lame
duck President, but there was
no suggestion of that Tuesday
when all Chicago joined in
"Ike Day."
An estimated one million
persons, visiting delegates and
just plain citizens, jammed
Chicago's loop to smother the
President in confetti as he
paraded slowly from a small
helicopter port beside Lake
Michigan to the GOP conven
tion hotels.
Three Appear in
Circuit Court
Three men appeared in
Jackson county circuit court
yesterday, all of them charged
wih crimes involving automo
biles. Leslie Paul Davis, 44, of
Seattle, Wash., appeared on
charges of using a motor ve
hicle without permission of
the owner, and Medford law
yer Warren G. Lesseg was
appointed counsel. Davis is
charged with taking a car
owned by Jeffrey Clay Knope
July 21.
Clyde Leonard Maitland,
,45, of Forest Grove, appeared
on charges of grand larceny,
and Medford lawyer Phillip
Lowry was appointed his
counsel. He Is charged with
taking a car owned by Eldon
Fagan.
Charles Edward Strunk, 20,
of Torrance, Calif., pleaded
guilty to district attorney's in
formation charging grand lar
ceny, and a pre-sentence re
port was ordered. Strunk is
charged with taking a car in
Ashland July 14.
