Saudek, In setting forth his
views, speaks quietly, with
deep conviction. He docs, In
all fairness, believe TV Is
showing long-term Improve
ment In Its schedules. But he
considers Its rale of Improve
ment too slow.
Expresses Dismay
He also Is dismayed by the
stiffening of resistance to TV
specials, which came about
because of soma notable fail
ures in the season just ended,
"They called every ordinary
variety chow a special end
when thoy didn't hold au
diences with them, they
swung away from doing more
specials," said Sudck. "Actual
ly, each special should be
Judged on Its own. Each is
different because the Idea on
which It Is based Is different.
At least, that's how I see tt.
"We get an Idea and then
we cast the parts. Too many
times, a couple of stars are
lined up first and then the
producer starts looking
around for an idea, This leads
to great anxiety and the
anxiety tends to throw the
entire concept of the special
Into the hands of the star.
"Generally," Saudek add
ed, "this wrecks the show.
You've got to do specials on
your own terms, beginning
with the Idea and going on
from there."
Although Saudek winces
when he hears the phrase "In
tellectual ghetto" used to de
scribe TV's Sunday afternoon
programming, In which "Om
nibus'' started and will return
next fall, he's Just against the
phrase, not the concept.
"We put 'Omnibus' Into a
Sunday afternoon slot when
we started because those after
noons were barren. We en
riched that time. Actually,
Sunday is the glory of Ameri
can TV," Saudek said.
