Beginning Wood
Working Class Is
Slated At Shop

class will start Aug. 1 for
boys between the ages of 6
and 14 at the Economy Cab
inet shop, 3528H South Pa
cific highway, Medford, it was
announced today.
Roy Harlacher, Medford,
will direct the program which
features the use and care of
hand tools. During the course,
projects including children's
furniture, boats, and cut-outs
will be made. Future classes
in leather craft, plastic, cop
per enameling, and paper
craft will be held later, Har
lacher said.
The class will be held Mon
day, Wednesday and Friday
at four different times, 8 to
10 a.m., 10 a.m. to noon; 1 to
3 p.m., and 3 to S p.m. A fee
of $10 per month will be
charged each boy, he added.
Transportation Planned
Transportation will be fur
nished for those who need it.
Pick up locations have been
set at Medford High school,
MacLoughlin Junior High and
Hedrick Junior High school.
The classes are limited to
20 students and will start
with the registration of at
least 10 boys.
The classes will continue
during the school year with
a late afternoon and evening
schedule. No girls have been
provided for at this time;
however, they may be ac
cepted at a later time, ac
cording to program directors.

The Medical
TroubU With Swallowing
People write to ask why
they are having trouble swal
lowing. Some say they can
swallow fluids but arc hav
ing trouble with solids. A
few nervous old ladies have
a curious difficulty. They
chew and chew but cannot
seem to make up their mind
to swallow. They are like a
person who is afraid to swal
low a big tablet. This is a
mental disease.
Quite a few persons, usual
ly under 40, suffer from a
spasm either In the gullet or
at the cardia-the valve where'
the gullet joins the stomach.
These spasms can be seen with
the help of the x-ray. I find
that many of the persons with
such spasm seem to have in
herited a tense nervous sys
tem from some highly nervous
ancestors. Some of the pa
tients have to have an expert
dilate the cardia with a special
instrument. Then they can
swallow again.
If I needed such treatment
I would go to a big Institution
like the Mayo Clinic where I
would find men who special
ize in this work and hence can
do it safely and expertly.
Sometimes the spasm is so
marked that the patient has
to begin by swallowing a
length of strong silk thread.
Curiously, this finds its way
through the tightly closed
valve. Later, the expert
threads his dilator over the
silk threat, and in this way
slips it down through the ob
structed place without poking
it into the surrounding tissues.
Any person past 40 who
suddenly finds himself (or
herself) unable to swallow
easily must hurry to an x-ray
man who usually can tell
quickly whether the difficul
ty is due to spasm or to the
presence of a cancer. The
cancer can be in the esophagus
(gullet) or the cardia or in
the upper part of the stomach.
Unfortunately, the results of
operation in these cases are
often poor - the patient went
to the surgeon too late. When
a cancer at the cardia Is in
terfering much with swallow
ing, an expert can give great
relief by using the dilator.
In rare cases a man who has
had a little stroke, for a time
will have great difficulty in
swallowing. I remember also
men with cancer at the base
of the tongue who could not
swallow and had to take their
food through a stomach tube.
Another somewhat unusual
cause of difficult swallowing
is a diverticulum or out
pouching of the gullet. When
the pouch gets big, It fills
with food and then presses on
the gullet - perhaps hard
enough to obstruct it. Fortun
ately, today, an expert chest
surgeon can operate and tie
off and remove the pouch.

Monday night.

ious operation the patient
very much needs his veins, as
for a transfusion, they may
be badly scarred up by count
less Injections of drugs that
could Just as well have been
given by mouth.
A Boy Is Smoking Marijuana
A mother writes in great
distress saying that she has
just learned that for years her
son has been smoking mari
juana cigarettes. She wants to
know what she can do. I fear
- nothing. She cannot watch
her son day and night, and
she cannot cure him against
his will. I learned many years
ago that it is a waste of time
and energy to try to cure any
one who does not much want
to be helped. It is hard enough
to cure a habituated person
when he wants very much to
get off a drug. Usually, he has
a weak will, a strong tendency
-like a child-to do just what
he wants to do, and then a
strong tendency to blame
everyone but himself for the
trouble he gets into.
Cold Allergy
A woman says she- suffers
from so-called allergy to cold,
and also to heat and sunshine.
I remember a motion picture
I saw once of a woman who
rapidly bloated when one of
her hands, with the forearm
was put Into cold water. One
of America's well-known phy
sicians who was a character
and an enthusiast, was always
telling of the cases of cold al
lergy he had seen. I cannot
say much about this disease
because I have only a faint
memory of having seen per
haps a case or two of it. Ob
viously, the person must be
hypersensitive to a marked de
gree. A doctor can try to ac
custom the patient to increas
ing amounts of cold by having
her bathe each day in some
what colder water.
