Jacobsen, cost improvement
specialist for GE's missile and
space vehicle department
That SB million savine for
1960 is an estimate.. It could
be far from the mark. In
1959, the target was $5,260,
000 and the actual saving was
$7,540,000. Hence this year's
rnulri rp-nch nrtnvp. the SR mil
lion mark.
Doesn't sound like much in
these days of billions for this
and for that. But it's consider
ed very significant in a highly
competitive business where
there is no benefit of assembly
lines - and every job is dif
ferent from the one before.
Three Types of Saving
Jacobsen explained that
things are moving a bit slow
er this year because the de
partment has received a tre
mendous amount of new busi
ness, and he said that if would
be a little while before the
men could become familiar
enough with the new tech
niques to begin to take ad
vantage of cost improvements.
General Electric some time
ago concluded that the only
way to get the space vehicle
business was to keep the costs
down, so it set about to re
search the best methods to do
Just that.
GE's work for the govern
ment is on a cost plus fee and
a cost plus incentive basis. It
produces missile nose cones,
space vehicles and other hard
ware. "Cost improvement, rather
than merely reduction, is the
basic aim of GE's missile and
space vehicle department,"
says Jacobsen.
"We recognize three types
of savings attained in cost im
provement - cost reduction -continuing
to do something,
but at less cost; cost elimina
tion - ceasing to do something
which was being done; and
cost avoidance - not doing
something that was going to
be done.
"Cost improvements wins

bill lower than anticipated
. costs."
