Boston in reporting on how
much a doctor can learn about
people by asking the right
questions and how much bet
ter the people feel when they
answer them. -
Palmer is not a psychiatrist
but an Internist, treating the
range of common body com
plaints. But he haa long been
a student of the effect emo
tions have on body functions
and as long ago as 1950 he
published a scientific run
down on personality types and
high blood pressure.

Palmer reported to the New
England Journal of Medicine
that .most . of the 400 were
"more than willing" to answer
the questions, and in aome
detail. .' : :
Following scientific meth
ods, Palmer- tabulated the
answers and found thai 47 per
cent of the 400 said yes, they
did ask themselves what they
were getting. ,
. "A few felt cheated by life
and some said they more often
asked themselves what they
had given to life."
. As for the meaning' of life,
only 34 per cent said yes and
they often asked a question
of their own, "Docsn t every'
one?" But most of the 400
answered the question by say
ing, "I don t know and
few with, "I'm not that deep.
Nine per cent said their re
ligious belief was the meaning
of their lives.
Only 24 per cent of the 400
admitted to feelings of dread
or panic or terror. One said
"I am afraid to die, but I am
afraid lo say II." A woman
said the feeling made her
overeat and she got In "when
I am afraid of. death."

Honey bees, along wilh
many other allied creatures,
have had the built-in ability
of finding their way over the
shortest course many years
before any one ever heard of
such a thing as a road map or
a compass. Whether the insect
docs this from memory, scent,
direction of light, direction of
wind or barometric pressure
has never been satisfactorily
explained. Any or none of the
present theories may or may
not be right.

Carry one or more bees in
a closed box several miles. As
soon as they are released they
start "on a bee-line for home."
Somehow they follow an In
visible path through the air
and end up at the home hive.
Some beekeepers suspected
the insects watch for familiar
landmarks. However scientists
have pretty definitely proven
that the bee is terribly near
sighted. .
It is doubtful if they can
see an object over three or
four feet away,- so Ihe land
mark, idea would seem to be
out. In flight, the bee probably
flics at about 30 miles an
hour, and at times forages sev
eral miles away from the
home base.
Ordinarily the trip to the
hive is made with a full load.
The axiom is "a lazy bee will
break its back rather than
make an extra trip." But this
human-like action does not
exactly apply as a worker bee
will "wear its wings to the
quick'' if the need seems ur
gent. In fact it will go further
and fray its wings to tatters
if such a sacrifice seems neces
sary to the good of the hive.
It has been estimated by
competent authorities on mat
ters of this nature, that one
pound of honey represents ap
proximately 300.000 miles of
flight. Even this staggering
figure grows insignificant
when we realize that a cache
of honey weighing SO pounds
would mean about 15 million
miles of flying by these tiny

sugar deal with Communist
China, amid speculation that
diplomatic recognition of the
Reds by Cuba would follow
shortly. - .
The trade agreement was
signed late Saturday night.
The newspaper Revolucion
said that Cuba and China
agred to a five-year pact, with
500,000 tons of sugar to be ex
ported to China annually.
The Communists would pay
20 per cent of the bill In cash
and the rest In goods for the
first year of ihe agreement,
the paper said. It gave no de
tails of subsequent ycRrs.
The treaty appeared similar
to the one Cuba concluded
with the Soviet Union last
February, when aCstro began
to replace the United States
as his major sugar market by
dealing with the Communists.
