Faust Lone 17-Year-Old
On U.S. Olympic Squad.
Eugene - On each Olympic
squad there Is always at least
one youngster who surprised
track and field experts with
his skill and out-performed
his more experienced elders
for one of the coveted berths
on the United States team.
When the sauad begins ar
riving at University of Ore
gon Monday to begin work
outs and preparations for the
training meet at Hayward
Field on July 30 there will
be two college freshmen on
the team and one of them is
a 17-year-old from Occidental
named Joe Faust.
He won't be 18 until Sept.
21, so he has belter than a
year's edge on Tony Watson,
the sensational Oklahoma
freshman broad jumper, who
turned 19 in the spring.
Faust was truly a surprise
in the trials, although he had
jumped 6-11 earlier In the
spring. There were doubts he
could hold his own with the
experienced jumpers who
made up the finest high jump
field In world history.
In fact, Faust, a scholastic
star as well as an outstand
ing athlete who is majoring
In mathematics, ended up sec
ond with a leap of seven feet.
The winner, of course, was
the Incomparable John Thom
as, a sophomore himself, of
Boston university with a
world record leap of 7-34.
Ticket Demand Brisk
Faust soared through the
competition without trouble
until the bar went over seven
feet and then he finally miss
ed. Interestingly enough, the
third place, was taken by
Charlie Dumas with a jump
of 6-11 and it was just four
years ago that Dumas was a
college freshman trying for
the team, and he made with
the first seven-foot leap in
world history at the 1956
Olympic trials in Los An
geles. The high jump is just one
of the features of the meet
which is expected to attract
one of the larger track
crowds in northwest history.
In addition to youth, the vet
erans are well represented
with three-time Olympic vet
eran Parry O'Brien, as well
