I get letters from people
who say that some near rela
tive who has an Inoperable
cancer wants to try an herb
doctor. Should he be permit
ted to do this? I say, "Most
certainly, yes." Let the pa
tient try anything he wants.
If he has the money to spare.
I wouldn't object much even
if he wanted to spend 5500
or so on treatment by some
ex-con-man and jail bird who
is now posing as a cancer
quack.
In the old days when I was
practicing in San Francisco,
some of my patients with scat
tered cancer would outrage
their family by announcing
their intention of going for
treatment to a Chinese herb-
doctor. I always said, "Let
him go and try the herbs; let
him try anything, just so long
as it isn't something that will
do him harm." A point which

I am ashamed to say many of
us doctors fail to see and act
on is that most people who are
seriously ill do not want to
be abandoned and left with
nothing to do or to take; they
want to keep doing something.
One reason why there are so
many well-to-do quacks about
is that, when we doctors
know of no really curative
treatment, we are inclined to
dismiss the patient and to tell
him not to come back. Often
we would be much kinder if
we would keep taking care
of the man, relieving pain,
seeing to it that he gets sleep,
and trying out some of the
newer treatments that offer a
little hope.
I'll never forget the lesson
a prominent attorney gave
me many years ago when, as
he was going blind, he told
me he had just given $5,000
to a rapacious and notorious
quack. I said, "But don't you
know that, for 30 years, that
man has been a crook, gypp
ing people right and left?"
"Yes," said the lawyer, "I
know that; but doctor, when
you are rapidly going blind
and no reputable eye-specialist
will give you any hope,
you'll gamble $5,000 on the
slightest possibility that the
con-man might have some
thing curative that the doc
tors don't know about." It is
a poor gamble. All my life
one of my hobbies has been
the history of medicine, and
right now, I cannot think of
any valuable contribution to
the healing art that has ever
been made by a quack.
