The Medical
by
Gravel' Disease)
Often I wish we doctors
would get over our tendency
always to use long words, and
then to refuse to stop long
enough in our busy afternoon
to tell a patient what the word
or words mean. To show how
bad the situation is; I'll make
a confession. Hardly a week
passes but a person asks me
what is Bielschowsky-Jansky's
disease or what is Bamberger
Marie's disease, etc., and I
have to look it up in the dic
tionary. Sometimes I never
heard of the disease before,
and sometimes, when I have
read about it, I cannot remem
ber all the details that my cor
respondent wants to know
about. Perhaps an unhappy
mother has just been told that
her blind infant has an am
aurotic (blind) family idiocy,
and has then been ushered out
of the office by the doctor's
nurse. Naturally, she is fran
tic to know if there is any
cure for the child. Can any
one anywhere get the child to
see again? Why did the dis
ease come? If it is hereditary,
will it attack one of the wom
an's other children? Should
she dare have another child?
How long will the blind baby
live? What I keep asking is
why do we doctors send a
woman out of the office with
all those questions unanswer
ed? Why don't we have book
lets on the many diseases -booklets
in which all the ques
tions can be answered?
Just now come letters from
some anxious women saying,
The doctor said I have
Graves' Disease. He gave me a
prescription and then his
nurse took me out of the of
fice. What is Graves' Disease?
Is it dangerous? Can I get
well? Will I need an opera
tion? Could I die of it? Why
do I feel so nervous and so
warm? Why is my heart rac
ing? Why do I perspire so
much? Why can't I sleep? Why
am I so irritable? Why have I

been losing so much weight?
Why are my eyes bulging?"
Actually, the doctor could
so easily have said, "You have
a little goiter which is pro
ducing too much secretion,
and this is poisoning you, and
giving you all your symptoms.
Doctors treat the condition
with either medicines, or ra
dioactive iodine, or an oper
ation. I am going to try first,
a medicine. When your thy
roid gland quiets down, you
will feel much better. We
must not neglect the condi
tion because it could damage
your heart muscle and your
liver."
Because the thyroid gland
regulates the body chemistry,
when it becomes too active
and makes too much secre
tion, the body acts like an en
gine that is1 running too fast
and shaking itself to pieces.

Skin Divers Warned
About Momsen Lung
Washington (Science Serv
Ice) A device which saved
many sailors the Momsen
Lung may mean death for
skin divers and swimmers, the
Navy has warned. Used by the
Navy in escape from sub
marines until 1956, the device
definitely was not designed
for diving, the Navy said.
Use of the lung in swimming
and especially as a breathing
apparatus for skin diving can
cause death from lack of
oxygen, rupture of the lungs,
carbon dioxide poisoning or
drowning. Some of the de
