Sinatra Says
He's Innocent
Los Anceles-OTll-A deputy
city attorney said he would
decide today whether to file
assault and battery charges
against singer Frank S Intra
The slim singer appeared
before Deputy City Attorney
Edward L. Davenport Tuesday
to explain his part in a fracas
May 14 outside a Hollywood
nightspot.
Parking lot attendant Ed
ward Moran, 21, complained
Sinatra and John Hopkins,
traveling companion of singer
Sammy Davis Jr., slugged
him during the scuffle.
Not so, said Sinatra.
Sinatra said he was about
to remonstrate with Moran
about another parking lot at
tendant nearly hitting him
with an auto when he saw
Moran "gesticulating with his
arms.
I put up my hands to de
fend myself," said Sinatra. "I
was in fear of my safety."

Convention to Mark
100th Year Since
Lincoln Nominated
Chicago - H'PD-One hundred i
years ago, the infant Republi
can party held Its second na
tional convention in this city
and after three acrimonious
ballots, nominated a lanky
lawyer named Abraham Lin
coln for the presidency.
This Monday, the Republi
cans will return to Chicago
for their 27th convention.
This time there will be har
mony all over the place, and
it will take just one ballot for
them to nominate Richard M.
Nixon to oppose Sen. John F,
Kennedy in November.
But there will be some dis
cordant sounds from Gov. Nel
son A. Rockefeller of New
York when the Republicans
offer their curtain-raiser in
the form of platform commit
tee hearings this week.
The convention itself will
be held in the International
Amphitheater at the Chicago
Stockyards. Chicago, an old
hand at conventions (22 since
1860), was chosen as the con
vention site because this is
the centennial year of Lin
coln's nomination here.
Expact Challtngt
Nixon has no major chal
lenger for the nomination, al
though Rockefeller stands
ready to challenge the Repub
lican record as written by
President Eisenhower's ad
ministration. Rockefeller is scheduled to
appear before the platform
committee Tuesday to fire an
other volley. He began firing
six weeks ago when he pub
lished a manifesto, calling on
Nixon to speak out on nation
al issues and laying out an in
dictment of the Eisenhower
administration.
He followed up at the Na
tional Governor's conference
last month with an attack on
the administration's defense
program and its plan for med
ical care for the aged. He said
$3.5 billion more a year
should be spent on defense
and that medical care for the
aged should be financed by
Social Security payroll taxes
instead of federal-state subsi
dies proposed by the adminis
tration. Rockefeller, who retired as
a candidate for the presiden
tial, nomination last Decem
ber before he ever announced
for it, also unloaded a 6,000
word memorandus last week
end detailing his ideas for the
platform.
Chang, Unlikely
Since his ideas amount to
a repudiation of the GOP ad
ministration now in office, he
has little chance of persuatl
ing the Republican conven
tion to embrace them.
Any platform fireworks ig
nited by Rockefeller would
contrast with the peace and
quiet with which the GOP

has been writing Its campaign
documents at recent conven
tions. The Democrats could
not believe they were holding
a convention if they escaped
a row over the platform.
The Democratic convention
last week adopted a platform
with planks to please just
about every liberal bloc in
the country and a civil rights
plank so drastic that it stun-
ncd conservative southern
delegates.
Southerners gasped and
protested but refrained from
more violent forms of rebel
lion because they were still
trying to nominate Sen. Lyn
don B. Johnson of Texas for
President. They still professed
to be unsure, however, whe
ther their state party organi
zations would stick with the
national ticket for the 1960
election.
