Docs an Animal
Show Emotion?
, There are many people who
stoutly maintain an animal
Js incapable of any detectable
emotion.
Of course, no trace of
worry or fright appears on
the expressionless face of a
frog while the poor thing is
in the jaws of a snake. Yet
the frog must be afraid for
it will struggle; the impulse
of self-preservation is ever
present.
The ant certainly exhibits
no feeling of joy, hate or
grief; It is always too busy
to bate anything or anybody,
even another ant that might
have solen its food. Yet it
displays something like anger
for it will fight an ant from
another colony. It must know
concern for when its colony
is disturbed, it will rush to
the eggs and attempt to save
them. It exhibits something
akin to parental solicitude in
this respect.
Riik Life-
; It will even risk its life to
save the young ants of the
colony; yet it also desires to
live. The desire of self pres
ervation Is as strong in one
of these lowly insects as it
is in any living creature. It
would seem that the ant
knows something akin to fear,
and it will make every effort
to avoid danger.
Very certainly a dog dis
plays an emotion when it
wags its tail in joyous wel
come to its master or snarls
in anger at the approach of
an' enemy. A cat displays vis
ible anger, or at least some
degree of tenseness, when the
end of her tail twitches or she
purrs happily when stroked.
She seems gladly anxious
when she waits at a hole in
the baseboard while waiting
for a mouse.
Over the blank face of a
cow there appears no expres
sion' or hope of contentment
when the day is done and
she begins the homeward trip
along the well-worn cowpath,
but it could hardly be denied
that she looks forward to the
comfort of the home-stall
and the food awaiting her;
there must be at least a shred
of joy, a faint residue of an
ticipation, at the prospect of
restful night.
Animals Learn
All creatures of the world,
both great and small, living
In their natural environment
must certainly have many
terrible experiences during
the ' course of their normal
lives. These experiences
would be remembered for
some little period of time.
Any animal, even the lowest,
learns to keep away from
sharp thorns in the wilder
ness, cutting grasses in the
meadow or electric shocks in
a laboratory. Experience
teaches it what to avoid.
The rat or other animal in
a tangled maze of tunnels and
passageways, retains a mem
ory of which passage leads
to food and which to electric
shock and discouragement;
this is fear of a kind,
All this actions to some de
gree Indicate what we could
call emotions, depending on
the position the creature oc
cupies in the animal scale.
Man is not alone in expres
sing anger, joy, happiness,
jealousy or even sadness of
a kind and, of course, various
degrees of love.
About the only emotion the
animal does not have to any
degree is revenge. Revenge
seems to be solely reserved
for man himself and is evi
dent in every level of human
behavior.
