Economy Reported
Hitting Faster Pace
Than Ike Expected
Washington -lUI'U- A com
merce department report
showed Sunday that the
economy hit an even fuster
puce In the second iuurter of
the year than the record $303
billion announced by Presi
dent Elsenhower.
Upward revisions of pusl
major business mcusurcmenui
Indicated that In the second
quarter production of goods
and performance of services
hit an annual rule of $505
billion.
The revisions were based on
new information about 11157
economic activity derived
from studies of income tax
payments. With these figures
higher, key economic stalls
lies for following years also
were revised upward. Vir
tually all the Increases were
less than one per cent.
The report did not alter
the look of the current busi
ness situation. After a lusty
first quurtcr which saw manu
facturing Industries rebound
ing from steel strike slow
downs and rebuilding indus
tries, the economy slowed
down markedly In the spring.
$14.9 Billion Jump
In the first quarter gross
national product - total out
put of goods and services -jumped
by $14.0 billion to an
unnunl rutc of $501.3 billion.
The rise in April-May-Juno
was just short of $5 billion,
officials said.
A like gain Is expected for
the current quurtcr and a
moderately larger one for the
final three months of the
ycur. Originally the adminis
tration expected the gross na
tional product for all of 10(10
would total $510 billion. This
estimate was shaded to $507
billion In May. Today's statis
tical revisions suggested the
final figure may be higher.
The report lifted the 1059
production total from $479.5
billion to $482.1 billion. Al
lowing for small price in
creases which occurred In
1950, tills was a gain of seven
per cent from 1958, the de
partment said.
Except for farming, In
creases were registered last
year In every major type of
earnings - wages and salaries,
corporate profits, Interest,
rental Income and earnings of
professional people and busi
nessmen. "In relative terms," the de
partment suld, "the most pro
nounced Improvement shown
for any Income share was the
25 per cent rebound of cor
porate profits, which had been
off sharply In 1058 due to the
recession." Profits before
taxes hit a record $47 billion,
up from $37.7 billion In 1958.
In the first three months of
11150, corporate profits rose to
an annuul rate of $48.8 billion.
Other key economic meas
urements for 1091) were per
sonal Income $383.3 billion,
compensation of employees
$277.8 billion, disposable in
come $337.3 billion, consump
tion spending $313.8 billion
and personal saving $23.4 bil
lion. All were new highs.
