and raised at Lnnu Creek,
(Irani county, In eastern Ore
Kim. He has been In Hint vi
cinity ever since his birth. He

tiful trees and mountains
around.
He bus been a prospector
for Kold nil his life, except for
four years which ho served In
the American Army In France
and on the Mexican border
and for wlilln in the Ha
waiian Islands.
Recently he eaino to the

and a snow while beard, and
maintains there Is little wronu,
with It 1 tit . He is a ready talker
and loves to tell at the proper
time and place of the beauti

While on the western front
In France, he was youiiK and
much In love, and came from
tlic trenches with the rlKht to
wcur a victory medal. Once
he was made a serifeant on the
field of battle. This promotion
did not take, evidently, for he
was reduced to buck private
again, after some peace-time
exploit.
He wos happy IhrouKh it
all, for he had a country and
a Klrl both, to fight for. A lot
of men around him scarcely
ever got letters, but Blackwell
heard regularly from his girl,
who was a school teacher in
eastern Oregon, U.S.A.
Hut then, one day when the
fighting was all over, soldier
Dlackwell, at a time of great
loneliness, received a "Dear
John" letter. It came from
eastern Oregon.
He stood with hobnails In
the mud and took out the let
ter from the wet, broken en
velope. He read It in the prcs-
ence of the whole army, It
seemed to blm. The news was
bad that came that day from
bis girl friend In Long Creek,
Oregon, U.S.A.
One of bis hands began to
shake.
She had decided not lo mur
ry Illackwell. And she would,
her letter suld, be married to
a young barber by the time
soldier illackwell got her let
ter In France.
Ills hund shook so bad, he
dropped the wet letter In the
mud. After all, be hud been
"keeping company" with her
for a long time and bad more
or less assumed that when the
war was over, she would be
his wife. Resides, be bud pro
tected her nearly all his life.
She was beautiful. Black
well still remembers, her to
this day. He can never forget
bow she looked the duy be left

ised to be faithful. "But, you
know how that is " com

The shock was too great to
bear. It upset him when she
suld she would be murricd by
the time he got the letter. He
leaned on his gun und bent to
pick up the letter but his hand
was shaking so bad, he
couldn't get hold of it with
his fingers.
He left it there in France in
the mud.
When he returned to Long
Creek, Oregon, a few months
later, his coal-black hair and
beard had turned white as
snow.

Official To Visit
In City This Week
Miss Julie Johnson, execu
tive secretary of the Oregon
State Council on Aging, will
arrive In Mcdford Monday to
begin a scries of talks before
local groups.
Miss Johnson will stay
three days as a guest of the
local Rogue Valley Council,
Slnco Oregon is In the top"
third of the states In percent
age of older people In its
population, Miss Johnson be
lieves that the problem of ag
ing is as important to Oregon
residents as those of power
dams, timber cutting, irriga
tion and tourists.
This is a problem which po
tentially faces every person.
"He Just has to live long
enough," she said.

Miss Johnson will make her
p.m. on the KBES-TV social
security program.
Her final appearance will
be Wednesday noon at the Ki
wanis club luncheon at the
Rogue Valley Country club.
Cold Storage Plant Offered for Lease
A 50,310 square foot cold
storage plant In Seattle,
Wash. Is being offered for
lease, according to W. M.
Truesdalc, chief of the real
estate division of the U. S.
Army engineer district.
Invitations for proposals
to lease the facility, known as
the Seattle Quartermaster
Market Center cold storage
plant, arc available for a bid
opening scheduled for Aug.

cold storage purposes except

Grunt county, Oregon.
He let his beard grow out,
which almost suddenly had
become as white as his hair.
His white hair was long in
almost no time at all, as he
prospected for gold up and
down the creek. Tourists
sometimes would stop and
take his picture.
One day he hit it rich. The
people began to notice him.

', live part in the community.
He makes a good Santa
Cluus, and each Yuletidc sea
son at Long Creek he dresses
up like St. Nick and gives
away many presents. Not only
to the children but to grown
folks too.
At present, Blackwell Is
living at the domiciliary but
he feels that soon, ho will
have to go back to his ghost
town, prospect, and live alone.
He is convinced that his arm
Is getting better. He is alert
and active and not unhappy,
lie holds a tennis ball in
his hand to keep his arm from
shaking 30 bad.
"What do you think about
life?" he was asked.
"I've always had a big
time," he replied with vigor
and energy. "Besides," he
went on, "I've hit it rich sev
eral times. I'm a gold miner,
you know.
He is fiercely Independent
and laughs pleasantly. He is
determined to go back to Long
Creek prospecting again and
make another strike if his
hund stops shaking before
Christmas time comes.

Jackson County Tuberculosis
and Health association's tele
vision progrnm today.

on a panel discussion of water
safely at 3 o'clock this after
noon. Moderotor of the panel will
be Mrs. C. Ivan Burton.
Last week about 300 feet
of film was shot at Haw
thorne pool showing a simu
lated rescue, different meth
ods of artificial respiration
and teaching closses In ac
tion, The film will be shown on
the program with commen
tary by the panelists. They
plan to discuss what is being
done in Mcdford to prevent
drownings and other water
accidents. Ways that the pub
lic can help reduce the an
nual loll of deaths by drown
ing and instructions for emer
gency situations will also be
given.

Glonning, special service offi
cer. At 10 a.m., Miss Johnson
will speak at a special meet
ing of the Inter-Agency Coun
cil at the Red Cross audito
rium. Visitors are welcome,
Mrs. Laura Porter, chairman
of the group, said. .

be the guest speaker before
the Medford Rotary club at
the Rogue Valley Country
club.
After the luncheon. Miss
Johnson will visit the art
class at the Senior Center.

work at the Greenwich Vil

brary park, Saturday.
