In France
Paris (VPD - Bill Johnston
of Provo, Utah, will join next
week's field for the PGA
tournament at Akron, Ohio,
with a lot more prestige as a
result of his play in the Brit
ish and French Open cham
pionships. . The 35-year-old Johnston,
now in his 11th year on the
U. S. pro circuit, Wednesday
finished in a tie for second
place behind Roberto DeVi
cenzo of Mexico in the
French Open.
In the British Open the
week before, Johnston and I
Arnold Palmer were the only I
Americans who qualified for
the final two rounds of the
tournament.
DeVicenzo shot nine bird
ies on the last of Wednesday's
two rounds to win the French
Open with a 72-hole total of
275 strokes.
Johnston, who led the field
i by one stroke at the 36-hole
mark, shot rounds of 72 and
70 on the St. Cloud course to
wind up in a tie for runner-
up at 278 strokes with Leo
pold Ruiz of Argentina.

golfers - began their four-day
inarch over the Western golf
course to open the 57th annu
al Western Open.
Victories in the last two
major PGA tournaments
have established Souchak and
Wall as the p re-tourney fa
vorites in the $25,000 West
ern scramble.
Souchak, who won last
year's Western at Pittsburgh
by one stroke with a final
round 65, turned his best per
formance of the year two
weeks ago with a comeback,
one-stroke triumph in the
Buick Open at Flint.
Included in the field are
euch big names as Bob Ros-
burg, who defends his PGA
title next week at Akron,
Ohio, Ken Venturi, Jerry
Barber, Billy Casper, Doug
Ford, Tommy Bolt, Gene Lit
tler, Cary Middlecoff and
Sam Snead.
The only notables not en
tered are Palmer, who has
previous commitments, Dow
Finsterwald and Ben Hogan.
