India Claimed to
Need Increased
Protective Foods

ice) - The solution to India's
-dietary problems lies in in
creasing "protective foods'
. rather than stepping up pro
duction of rice, wheat and
other grains.
This is the belief of Dr.
Wendell Griffith, nutrition au-
' thority of the University of
California, Los Angeles, wno
, has just returned from a
year's study of such problems
in India where he represented
the United Nations Food and
Agriculture Organization and
the Children s Fund.
There are required produC'
' tion and consumption of addi
tional amounts of milk and
dairy products, legumes
(grams, peas, etc.), flour from
oil seeds such as peanuts and
- sesamum, leafy green and yel
low vegetables, citrus and oth
er fruits for the vegetarians
and eggs and poultry, fish and
meats for the non-vegetarians.
Multiple cropping and im
proved agricultural practices
would give such increased
amounts of protective foods.
Nutrition Program Needed
An extensive nutrition edu
cation program is also needed
to persuade the people to use
more protective foods in their
daily fare. Food habits are
formidable, even those having
no religious basis, and there
must be a strong incentive for
the consumer to accept chang
es in his accustomed diet.
An immediate need is some
thing to counter protein mal
nutrition, especially prevalent
among infants and small chil
dren. This cannot, in Dr. Grif
fith's opinion, await develop
ment of an adequate supply of
safe milk.
One solution is the making
of gruels for the children from
legumes and peanuts. These
foods are available to most
families if mothers can be
educated to make gruels from
them.
Chickenpox Can
Kill Grownups,
Physician Warns
' Chicago - (Science Service)
- Chickenpox, usually a mild
childhood disease, can kill
adults. A Texas physician has '
just reported four deaths from
chickenpox complications.
In the adults the disease be
came disseminated and the
lungs were affected.
Dr. Stewart A. Fish of Dal
las, reporting a e r e in me
Journal nf the American MpH- '
ical Association, says chicken-
pox, which is "usually a mild j
childhood disease, may cause
severe systemic complications
and death in adults."
He says the lungs are al
most always involved and that
other vital organs including
the brain, kidneys and liver
may be affected. The death
rate has been estimated at
between 10 per cent and 30
per cent for patients with such
disseminated chickenpox.
No Drug Therapy
- At present, there is no drug
' therapy available which will
cure the disease or modify its
course once the lungs and
other viscera are involved.
Awareness of the danger is
'. Important, as early diagnosis
may be a means of preventing
- dangerous complications.
. The doctor makes a plea
for earlier hospitalization of
- -patients with disseminated
' chickenpox. His four patients
were not hospitalized until
they were desperately ill.
Dr. Fish says routine X-rays
should be performed on all
adult patients with chicken-pox.
