With Effective
Organization

Los Angeles - (UNI - Sen.
John F. Kennedy didn't cap
ture the Democratic presiden
tial nomination with just mir
rors and money.
He did it with daring, per
sonality, a lot of money - and
the most effective political or
. ionization since the heyday
of James A. Farley.
That added up to a power
house effort. And if there is
anything that commands po
, litical respect - however re
luctant - it's power.
The Massachusetts senator
had some rough party terrain
to cross on the long road to
Los Angeles. But, like the
Army engineers, he had a
"Bailey bridge" to carry him
Into the camps of the political
pros.
His "bridge" from the Sen
ate and Cape Cod to the op
erating levels of the Demo
cratic "pros" was bald-pated,
cigar-smoking John M. Bailey,
Democratic state chairman of
Connecticut. Bailey not only
knew the party professionals
and where to find thera - he's
one himself.
Ribicoff - Man in Ranks
Kennedy's man in the ranks
of Democratic governors was
Abraham A. Ribicoff, the
suave governor from Connect
icut. Together and apart, they
worked the grass roots and
the state capitals, the regional
and national political sessions,
for Jack Kennedy. ;
Kennedy's brothers, Bobby
and Ted, startled the old pros j
with the drive they displayed i
in the long series of presiden-1
tial primaries won by the j
senator. I
Bailey In particular has
been criss-crossing the coun
try in behalf of the 43-yeap
old New Englander for many
months. He is as well known
among state leaders and po
litical writers as Jim Farley
was at his New Deal peak.
If that sounds like an exag
geration, the convention out
come Is as good an answer as
any.

"I'm here to meet an old
friend," was Bailey's soft ex
planation. And the point is, he
was.
Another Impressive thing
was Kennedy's use of a new
political "mix." He used the
lick-em-in-the - open primary
approach, the public image
television pitch - and the
smoke-filled room. I
The mistake of the John
son, Symington and Steven
son supporters appears to
have been in not recognizing
the punch In the Kennedy
effort sooner. The warning
signs have been flying since
1956. They've been flapping
in the opponents' faces since
Kennedy won his first pri
mary in March.
The basic decision which
made Kennedy the Democrat
ic presidential nominee was
the right and essential de
cision to enter the presiden
tial primaries. Kennedy swept
those he entered and he
missed few. Harry S. Truman
sneered that such primaries
were eyewash. HST probably
thinks differently today.
Truman and the old pros
were licked on their own
chosen battleground, a nation
al political convention.

Jacqueline Kennedy said ear
ly today her husband told her
not to join him in his triumph
in winning the Democratic
presidential nomination be
cause of her impending motherhood.
The slim, 29-year-old wife
of Sen. John F. Kennedy of
Massachusetts told newsmen
at her summer home here she
had spoken to her husband by
telephone in Los Angeles
twice after his nomination.
Mrs. Kennedy met with
scores of newsmen waiting
outside the Kennedy home
here. She said the senator
said it would be best for her
to remain on Cape Cod rath
er than go to the West Coast.

and her husband agreed with
