Pulp Plant
(continued from page 1)
urd growth and forest floor
residuals from logging and
wind throw.
"Some of the Jackson and
Josephine county forest indus
try plants have mude progress
in this direction. Some may
use up to 100 per cent of the
rcslduuia in the production of
surplus electric energy.. Oth
er plunts are now using up
to U0 per cent of these resi
dues in the production of
chips for paper mills and bark
products.
"A large quunlity of planer
shavings und suwdust are be
ing used in agriculture, dair
ies, chicken farms and other
uses. However, the greatest
need for expansion la in the
field of chip board and pulp
mills," he said.
"The present depressed
market in both pulp and chlp-
boaru clue lo over production
and low prices makes it dif
ficult to Interest prospective
Investors and banks to sup
port tnc expansion.
"If we had local plants to
use chips for pulp and chip
tourd instead of shipping
them to consumer markets
30 miles from Medford, the
problem would be quickly
solved for those mills which
are now forced to burn resi
due. ' he said.
"Jackson and Josephine
counties would probably have
a pulp mill today if the pulp
industry had been able to
eliminate the necessary water
and air pollution when price
and market considerations
were good.
"However, the pulp indus
try has now minimized these
problems, but unfortunately
market prices and over pro
duction make such an invest
ment undesirable at the mo
ment.
"It Is Indicated, however.
that chip board plants are on
the drawing boards of several
plants and they could become
a reality in the forseeable
near future. The lumbermen
are eternal optimists and giv
en any encouragement o n
price or markets, they will
find a way to expand their
plants and use all of the mill
residuals.
'Therefore, "Lausmann con
cluded, "Jackson county is
bound to expand its produc
tion of products and dollar in
come, but how much and how
soon cannot at the moment be
predicted."
