City Policeman
Injured During
Laundry Blaze
A Medford city policeman
whs slightly Injured Friday
morning as an indirect result
of the general alarm (ire at
Medford Domestic laundry
and Dry Cleaning.
Patrolman Keith Van Horn
was taken to Rogue Valley
hospital about 1:30 a.m. after
he snagged and cut his finger
on a nail while trying to re
pair the city hall's emergency
power generator.
Van Horn had three stitches
taken In his finger and was
released.
The power generator failed
its first real test Friday morn
ing. It is designed to switch
on automatically when there
is a power outage. But, when
the fire burned through
three 4.000 - volt California
Oregon Power company lines,
shutting out all . downtown
electricity for more than an
hour, the generator turned on,
sputtered and then stopped.
Without Lights
Without the generator the
city hall and police station
were without lights, radio or
teletype. According to the
city's electrical technician the
generator for some unexplain
ed reason blew a fuse.
The generator was out for
approximately 45 minutes and
the department had to rely on
their two portable radios for
communication between the
station and patrol cars. Lights
in the police station were fur
nished during this time by
flashlights.
Administrative Assistant Gil
Gutjahr said today that the
surplus generator which was
purchased from the federal
government for S250 and was
just installed last spring, had
passed all tests and he does
not know why it failed to
work.
Electricity was restored to
the downtown area about 2:25
a.m., according to Copco offi
cials.
Horned cattle in feed lots
use more trough space, pre
vent other cattle from feed
ing properly and may cause
bruises that lower carcass
value.

Kind People Who Send Trtai
menu for Dlseesea
I appreciate the kind
thought of people who send
me an old family recipe, for
the treatment of some dis
ease. Often, I am sorry; I
fear they will think me un
apprcclative, but usually
what happens is that, when
I look at the prescription, I
find it is for drugs which
have no value, and perhaps
are no longer much used by
doctors. Sometimes the pre
scription is an old one which
was used when I was a boy.
Applications Being
Taken for Camp
Applications are now being
taken for the Oregon Youth
Range camp.
The camp will be held Aug.
1 to 6 at 'the "P" ranch near
Frenchglen in Harney coun

Range Management, Pacific
Northwest section.
Four boys will be selected
from Jackson county, one
each from the 4-H and FFA
and two without ranching
background.
The bovs who attend the
camp will have an opportu
nity to learn useful skills and
to explore career possibilities
in ranee management and re
lated fields.
Any boy interested in at
tending should contact Ed
Harshman at SPring 2-2382
evenings or String z-wu-t

been tried again and again,
and always given up. The

less seemed to cure the writ
er, but if I were to try the
drug on a dozen people with
her disease it probably would
fail to work,
I recently read that in
England they are now trying
out the use of peanuts for
hemophilia (bleeding dis

ered accidentally, in this
country; but as the writers
said, when a disease tends
naturally to flare up and
calm down, it Is very hard to
say if a given drug had any
thing to do with bringing a
good spell.
Tattoo Marks
Many persons write asking
how tliey can get rid of tat
too marks. I would suggest
they see a plastic surgeon.
Often, if the tattooed area is
not too large, -the surgeon,
with perhaps a series of small
operations, can remove it, and
leave only a linear scar. A
big area probably would need
skin-grafting.
