Western Tinge
In Oar Trials
Syracuse, N.Y. (UPD - The
Cornell Crew club and the
Lake Washington Rowing club
from Seattle, became the first
entrants today to qualify for
final competition in the 1960
Olympic rowing trials on
Onondaga Lake.
The two clubs raced to
first-place finishes In the two
semifinal heats of the fours-wlth-coxswaln
event as the
second day of the trials got
under way. That put them In
the Saturday afternoon finals.
Opening trials Thursday
gave a definite western tinge
to the competition.
No one could dispute the
fact West Coast representa
tives appeared the ones to
beat In most events. And the
possibility existed - though
small - the Lake Washington
Rowing club of Seattle and
the University of California
could sweep all seven events
to represent the United States
in the Rome Olympics.
One probable stopper could
be the double sculls, a one
race final set for Saturday
afternoon with no preliminaries.
