Bock Stairs: Presidential Vacation
By MERRIMAN SMITH
UPI While Hous Reporter
Washington - HOT - Hack
stairs at the White House:
Tho President and Mrs.
Elsenhower went to Newport,
It. I., Thursday and they
should have a friendly sum
mer now that the riots (re
over.
The President was at Get
tysburg last week end when
the Newport police and as
sorted members of the armed
forces spent much of one evo
nlng battling modern music
lovers who could not get Into
the fainou Newport Ja
Festival,
Friend of the Chief Execu
tive who were playing golf
with him In Gettysburg
thought of, but decided
against kidding him about the
Newport riot as a prelude to
his arrival there. The friend
felt Elsenhower still might be
aomewhat sensitive on the
subject because riots of a
much more serious nature
were responsible for his hav
ing to cancel his long-awaited
trip to Japan.
Some of (he buddies who
were with the President last
week In Gettysburg probably
will be dropping in on him at
Newport. They Include the fa
mous man - about presidents,
George E. Allen; William E.
Robinson, board chairman of
Coca-Cola, and Barry Lclt
head, the Acad of Cluctt Pea
body. Those are the men on
whom the green fee at the
Newport Country club will be
no strain whatever.
The Elsenhowt-is did a nice
thing for the Whlto House em
ployees on tho night of the
Fourth of July. They Invited
all the help, high and low, to
bring their families to the
south lawn of the White
House, a wonderful place to
watch the traditional fire
work display on the ground
of tho Washington Monument.
Some of the employee and
their fomllle arrived two
hours ahead of time Just to lit
on tho well-kept lawn (nd
watch the swirling stream of
holiday traffic flow by the
peaceful ground.
The President' four grand
children may be In Newport
for at least a visit during the
summer, and If they Join their
grandparents by the sea, they
should be able to handle
themselves quite adequately
in swimming.

Asuncion, Paraguay - OJPI)
Twenty pale - faced Guayakl
Indian have returned to the
trackless Jungles of Eastern
Paraguay after a lx-month
taste of civilization. Their tay
gave scientist a rare oppor
tunity to study the little
known tribe whose own cul
ture ha not moved beyond
the stone age.
The Guayakl appeared
early thl year at the village
of Torln, 200 mile east of
Asuncion, with a request for
shelter and supplies. They
were cordially received by
the official Indian Protective
Aasoclation, but appear to
have decided they prefer their
own primitive way to mod
ern civilization.
Tribe Dwindling
A long history of mistreat
ment by the white men ha
made the Guayakl extreme
ly wary, and member of the
tribe seldom venture outalde
their forest stronghold. The
tribe 1 dwindling and i now
believed to number no more
than 1,000.
The little that is known of
them indicates they are no
madic hunter who roam the
jungle in small partiea, sub
sisting on the game they can
kill or the highly prized hon
ey of various species of bees.
They do no farming, nor
do they domesticate animal
except for an occaaional par
rot or coatl (South American
raccoon) which serve ai a
watchdog for their hunting
camp.
They build no permanent
shelters, although they occas
ionally Interlace branches to
form a protection against
heavy rain.
Mastered Ropomaking
The art of pottery, charac
teristic of the most ancient
cultures of the new world, Is
unknown to the Guayakl.
They have mastered ropemak
ing, and fashion cords of palm
fibers and monkey hair to
use In transporting heavy
kill like tapir or wild boar.
Some tribal chieftain wear
conical caps of Jaguar skin
trimmed with monkey tall,
but for the most part the
Guayakl roam the forests
nude.
Paraguayan ethologist Os
car Ferreiro describes the
Guayakl a "hort (averag
ing about 8 feet In height) but
extraordinarily itrong, hap
py, with attractive face and
peculiarly white kln, prob
ably accentuated by tholr life
In the sunless depth of the
Jungle,"
"The men go about nude,
with no adornment other than

reiro says.

wear necklaces of monkey'
teeth, strung by the hundred
