Repeated Depressions
Many of the letters that
come from readers of this
column are such wonderful
human docii'
mcnts that of
ten I wish I
could i h a r e
them with
you readers.
Many of them
tell so much
about nervous
troubles and
mental trou
bles. I just re
ceived a letter from a fine
woman who tells of her life
time of suffering f' m alter
nating spells of elation (mild
mania) and depression. She
has been much cheered to
read one of my columns in
which I pointed out that the
world is full of very intelli
gent and fine and even charm
ing people who, every so of
ten, go into a spell of either
mania or depression.
Some have only one or two
bad spells in a lifetime, while
others keep going in and out
of depressions, all their days.
Some have spells lasting
months or years, while some
have just brief "moody" and
"silent" or "grouchy" spells,
which last from a day to a
few weeks. I have known
some persons who had fre
quent spells which lasted only
for a day or even half a day.
I remember some women who
would get up in the morning
terribly depressed, so that
they could hardly face the
day's work. By four o'clock
they would be feeling well.
and by evening they were
full of life and energy. They
had "a short cycle."
'Just Felt Awful' .
I have known women, born
into families in which there
was a tendency to depression,
who for years had "mean
days" every week or 10 days
-spells in which they "jump
ed all over" their nice hus
bands or scolded their chil
dren without cause. During
these bad days, they "just felt
awful. Many depressive per
sons don't have the periods of
elation or mild mania, while
others have many of them.
As a beautiful young woman
once told me, when she was
manic she always got engag
ed, but when she became de
pressed, she ignored her beau
until he left.
A manic-depressive profes
sional man with considerable
charm told me that when he
was manic, he always eloped
with the wife of some friend,
and when he became depress
ed, she left him! Many manic
people ramble about the coun
try aimlessly, wasting a lot
of money. Some will get in
a taxi-cab and drive and drive
and drive. Others will throw
big parties, which they can
not afford; and others will
get to calling their friends
over the telephone at two or
three In the morning! I have
known hundreds of these
people who managed to hang
onto their sanity well enough
so that they never had to go
into a mental hospital. I
know any number who still
manage to carry on with their
work, even when they are so
depressed as to be utterly
miserable.
The fine woman who just
wrote tells me something that
interests me much from the
point of view of a student of
human genetics. Her father
drank himself to death early
in life, and then her mother
became so depressed she went
into a mental institution.
With such heredity on both
sides of the family, it is not
surprising that all of this
couple's three children have
suffered from a manic-depressive
psychosis. One of
them, like some of these peo
ple, has tried to take refuge
in alcoholism. All of them
are fighting to hang onto their
sanity, and so far all have
managed to keep out of a
mental institution.
Could Do Anything
As my correspondent says,
when she Is in an attack of
mania, she feels so wonder
fully well she thinks she
could do anything. She could
llllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

write a book or she could
tackle a big job in business,
but she has learned by sad
experience that she mustn't
be carried away by such en
thusiasms. Why? Because
when mania gets her to tackle
a big job she rarely can go
through with it. She cannot
then stick to anything for
very long.
Another thing this woman
is trying to learn is that when
she is depressed, she mustn't
look on herself as ornery,
lazy, and ungrateful, but as
"just sick." She must not yield
to the usual tendency of these
people to feel that they are
terribly sinful. Usually they
don't know exactly what these
sins are, but they are sure
they are awful, and many are
sure that God has forsaken
them because they are beyond
pardoning. This, of course, is
not so.
My correspondent tells me
that physicians have tried out
on her many of the new
drugs which are designed to
stimulate the brain, but she
says they act on her as liquor
acts on some people. Some
times the drug will make her
feel wonderful and then again
it will make her feel awful!
