reported to tin Public Health
Servlco here.
For the largo number of
pntlcnta who could not be
hospitalized bcciiuao no bcria
were available, the outpatient
drug therapy program proved
new hope for restored
health.
Local health depnrtmenta,
with the aupport of county
and atate health workera and
the cooperation of private phy
sicians, were responsible for
making the program work.
Because of tho poor finan
cial condition of the atntc,
funda needed for druga had to
be obtained locally. When-!
ever practical, patients were
encouraged to contribute'
aomcthlng toward the coat of j
the program. The authora be
lieve the.ie pnymenta, how-i

maintain treatment," aa well I

Countlaa Participate
Two yeara after the pro-:
gram waa Initiated, every
county In Mississippi waa par
ticipating. The home care
program Included patients
who had been hospitalized and
discharged,
Of this group, 83 per cent
were dlachnrged with medical
consent aa no longer needing
treatment. Those who entered
the program without prior
hospital care and were ao dis
charged numbered only 20
per cent. Hospitalization,
therefore, Is still recommend
ed "whenever practical."
The atudy revealed, how
ever, that the almple objec
tives of the program had been
achieved: "to protect the
health of the community by
reducing the sources of Infec
tion and to Improve the
health of the patlenti through
treatment."
Beryllium Refining
Process Discovered
Washington (Science Serv
ice) - High-purity beryllium,
containing less than one-half
per cent of undesirable ma
terial!, to meet apace age re
quirements can bo obtained by
electrically refining beryllium
crap metal, the Department
of Interior's Bureau of Mines
reported here. Berylllum'a Im
portant uses are In nuclear
reactors and In temperature
resistant materials for missiles
nd satellites.
The new method, developed
by three scientists at tho bu
reau's metallurgical research
laboratory in Boulder City,
Nov., uses what is known as
the fuscd-salt process. Use of
the technique for refining oth
er metals la under investiga
tion. Beads of beryllium are used
s on anode in the bottom of
a special air-free clcctrorcfin
Ing cell of the type developed
by the bureau to reflno titani
um. Molten salts of potassium,
lithium nnd beryllium serve
as tho olectrolytc, Crystals of
the near-pure beryllium form

The Investigations on beryl
lium refinement were made
by M. M. Wong, F. R. Cnttolr
and D, H. Baker Jr.
