LIGHTHOUSE MOVED The lighthouse which since 1906

Many Myths Have Been
Built Up Around the Owl
"Yes, sir, I've caught many
an owl by Just walking
around in a circle. The owl
will keep turning its head un
til it wrings its own neck."
So spoke the Old Timer.
It's surprising how many
people believe this, all be
cause the poor bird cannot
move Its eyeballs but must a!
ways turn its head. The eyes
are firmly locked; to follow a
moving object the owl must
turn Its head, but It certainly
doesn't turn it completely
around.
The head only comes to an
extreme turning point, then
quickly it is turned back. The
ball-and-socket arrangement
in the owl's neck docs allow
for a great turning radius, but
it docs not permit a full turn.
It is only a superstition that
an owl could wring its own
neck.

Another erroneous belief i
usually associated with these
solemn birds is the idea that
they can see at night or in
complete darkness. No ani
mal, the owl. included, can
see in total darkness. Of
course the owl, like many
other creatures that hunt dur
ing the night, on see better
in half-light than daylight
feeding animals, but they can
not "see" In the dark.
Not 'Wise . .
Neither is the owl an ex
ceedingly "wise" bird in spite
of its dignified appearance
and universal reputation for
"knowledge." In a wild, in
stinctive way he is wise to the
habits of those creatures on
which he preys, but his actual
IQ rating is rather low; he
doesn't rate with the top third
of their class.
Probably because the owl
is abroad only during the
hours of darkness and care
fully hidden from sight dur
ing the daylight hours, he is
but partially understood by
most folks. Around the bird,
because of its habits, have
been fabricated many strange
myths and superstitions.
The owl is often used in
stories of witchcraft and is a
symbol of mysterious "going's
on" at Hallowe'en, and all be
cause he is so little under
stood. Owls of some variety
occur in nearly every section
of the world. There are at
least 18 kinds in North Ameri
ca. Our owls range in size
from the tiny, little elf owl of
Arizona, which Is barely six
inches long, to the great Arc
tic owl. that may stand nearly
three feet.
Featherr Facet I
All owls have exceedingly j
feathery taces; even the bill Is
almost completely hidden.
One, the saw whet owl
doesn't even cry like others
of ils family but utters a
sound startlingly like a dull
file scraping over a steel saw.
All owls are valuable, Inas
much as they consume great
numbers of mice and rats as
well as many insects.
The owl swallows hide,
feathers, fur and bones of Ils
prey, apparently needing this
"roughage" for proper diges
tion. The owl family has always
been terribly misunderstood.
Ancient literature credited
them with being "birds of ill
omen." As "wise" as owls ap
pears to be, they have never
been able to educate the ma
jority of people with their
worthiness and hannlessness.
Poor things - they can neither
"see in the dark nor wring
their own necks."
