This Poor Roach Could
Not Crawl Downward
It would be natural to pre
sume that there would be an
oddball in every strata of liv
ing creatures; one that would
be a non-conformist or pecul
iar because of a physical or
mental quirk.
The world of the insects
would be no exception. This
character was about the odd
est of the oddballs. He was a
roach, one of the most hated
of the Insects. He had an af
flictlon that made him a
freak and his life a living
nightmare.
For some unknown reason
he couldn't crawl downward.
Once he arrived at the top of
any object on which he was
ascending, he was confronted
with his ever-present dilenv
ma; how to get back down. He
wasn't afraid of high places,
he was just incapable of get
ting down once he was up.
He couldn't get his reverse
gear shifted whereby he
could back down; he only
went In the direction his head
was pointing as long as it
wasn't pointing downward
Once up, where he aspired to
be, he was stymied; he dared
not the downward heading.
It was a terrible handicap.
However, to his everlast
ing credit, let it be recorded
that he never became dis
couraged even though he al
ways flunked the final test
so many times his back ached,
For a lowly bug he possessed

something akin to courage
and fortitude.
He came close to a solution
several times in a very logi
cal way. He would just let
loose ' and fall. He didn t
understand gravity enough to
know that it worked and that
what went up must come
down.
Then one evening when the
house was in semi-darkness,
he ventured again on his one
way trip. Just why he de
cided to go up the kitchen
wall will never be known,
but he often did the unpre
dictable. He was a roach, and
didn't know that one must
learn by past mistakes, so he
stupidly climbed the kitchen
wall.
Arriving at the ceiling,
there was only one way he
could go, horizontally across
the ceiling. Arriving at the
far wall, there was no way
except to crawl back.
Any of the four walls pre
sented the same problem. He
tried it for an hour, back and
forth, around and around.
He walked without getting
off the ceiling until he was
completely exhausted. Then
the solution came to him; he
let loose. Down he tumbled,
head over heels, right into
the very center of the lighted
burner on the gas stove.

Prowl Car Rams
Vehicle Fleeing
Scene of Holdup
Spokane (CPU Two sus
pected holdup men were cap
tured here Tuesday after
a policeman rammed his
prowl car into the rear of a
fleeing vehicle amid a hail of
bullets.
Two other men, one pos
sibly wounded and one pos
sibly armed, escaped on foot
after the smashup about 2:20
a.m.
The chase had begun after
two men were spotted run
ning from the scene of the
second of the motel holdups
within a few minutes of each
other just after 2 a.m.
Shots Relumed
The men jumped into a car,
which sped away, and began
firing. Officers in three one
man cars returned the fire
with shotguns. Police Chief
Clifford Payne said the rob
bers' car was hit at least 21
times by police bullets.
Patrolman Robert G. Bailor
managed to smash his car into
the fleeing vehicle and forced
it into a restaurant parking
lot. Bailor was only shaken
up but his prowl car was de
molished. Portland Man Held
One man, identified as
James D. Long, 24, Pasadena,
Tex., was thrown under the
car and received a possible
fractured leg.
Another man, identified-s
Raymond L. Lorentzen, 23,
Portland, Ore., received minor
cuts. Both were booked for
investigation.
Robert Lewis Deurbrouck,
on duty at the Travelodge
motel, said the holdup men
took between $600 and $700
in cash there. At the Down
towner, Garry L. Rofe said
the men took the cash box
and money bags containing
an undetermined amount of
money.
Struck on Head
Both men were struck on
the head and Dourbrouck's
wound required several
stitches to close.
Chief Payne said $1,500
was recovered along with one
of two automatic pistols used
during the chase, and a sup
ply of burglary tools.

Gilbert B. - I can't upset
Mother now.
Nancy R.-He doesn't real
ize how happy we could be.
Gilbert B.-I am a bachelor
of SO. I know people arc
ready to call me a woman
hater because of it, but I'm
nothing of the sort. I've al
ways enjoyed the company
of women and have been in
love a couple of times. Yet
things never worked out in
such a way that I got to the
altar. Circumstances always
interfered.
Recently I have been enjoy
ing the company of a divorcee
with grown, married children.
I definitely want to marry
her-but we must wait, and I
feel she should be willing to
do this if she loves me as she
says she does.
The problem is that my
mother (now ill and past B0)
has taken an intense dislike
to Nancy. She has always
hated divorcees. I don't want
to upset her by forcing things
at this time. Is that unreason
able? Nancy R.-I was married
more than 25 years before
I got my divorce, and al
though I had never been hap
py with my husband, I see
I am more unhappy without
a husband. I am not used to
being so lonely. My children
are married and I don't want
to be a burden on them.
I feel I sincerely love Gil,
but it's unfair of him to ask
me to wait. After all, we
aren't -kids and haven't a life
time ahead of us. We have
all too short a time to be
happy together.
When Gil says wait, I feel
he is really asking me to wait
until his mother dies. This is
a terrible thought to me be
cause I am eager to get mar
ried, but I don't wish for
anyone's death. Yet as long
as she lives I must be lonely
and miserable. Gil doesn't
realize how happy we could
be.
The Council: Nancy Is cer
tainly right in not wanting
to wait for the death of an
elderly woman to have an op
nortunity to find happiness.
But we are afraid she has
chosen the wrong man for her
purposes.

for marriage a good 25 years,
Yet somehow he has always
evaded it. Gilbert s protests

marry manage to do so against
all kinds of obstacles. "Cir
cumstances" aro what wo
make of them. Obscure pow
ers don't shape our lives. Wo
create them ourselves out of
whatever materials are avail
able. If Gilbert's desire for mar
riage were strong enough, he
would find a wuv to impose
his wlll-wlth a minimum of
damane to his mother, bhe is
apparently domineering and
overattached to him, but un
derneath she knows she has
no right to stand between
him and the satisfaction of
a normal existence. This moth
er might be upsot at first ot
having her will crossed, but
if she has normal maternal
love for her son, she will even
tually be pleased and proud
he has asserted his manhood.
It is Gilbert who fears taking
the emotional leap from his
mother's arms to those of a
wife. Whether or not he can
ever do it, depends mainly
upon hlmself-not upon "cir
cumstances." Nancy, on the other hand,
seems to have a talent for
getting into unhappy situa
tions.
A marriage that lasted 25
years certainly must have had
some solid elements-in addi
tion to the desire to keep the
home together for the chil
dren's sake. She failed to
moke the most of that marri
age and is now failing to
make the most of her freedom.
She is not tied to Gilbert,
who has proven himself an
unlikely prospect. She should
put an end to this frustrating
relationship and seek wider
interests, more social inter
change and a new life. This
life doesn't have to be lonely
-even if she is forced to do
without the greater satisfac
tions of a happy marriage.
