Pirates Split With Braves;
Yanks Bow to Washington
By NORMAN MILLER
Unltid Prist International
That July 4th tradition
bout league-leaders going to
meet in the World Scries
sounds great, but the Yankees
and Pirates would feel a 'ot
better about it if their pitch
ing measured up to their hit
tins. Shaky relief pitching caused
the Yankees to lose a game
and one-half of their Ameri
can league lead to the second
Place Indians iviumuiy.
And the bombing of Bob
Friend and Roy Face in the
first game of a double-header
prevented the Pirates from
gaining ground in the Nation
al league on the Braves and
Giants.
Friend blew a 6-1 lead and
Face yielded the winning run
in the 10th inning as t h e
Braves edged the Pirates, 7-6,
in the opener. With Harvey
Haddix pitching a six-hitter
in the nightcap, Pittsburgh
won, 7-2. The Pirates thus re
tained their 3V4-game lead on
Milwaukee.
Spahh Wins in Ralitf
Hank Aaron helped put Mil
waukee back into the first
game with a two-run homer
off Friend and Del Crandall
tied the score in the ninth
with a homer off Face. Al
Spangler singled home the
tie-breaking run in the 10th
against Face, making Spahn
the winner in relief. Bob Skin
ner and Dick Stuart hit Pitts
burgh homers.
Smoky Burgess drove in
three Pittsburgh runs in the
nightcap with a single and
double. Haddix yielded only
two singles after the first in
ning.
The Yankees also did some
heavy cannonading, including
the 300th homer of Mickey
Mantle's career, but reliever
Ryne Duren walked home the
winning run with the bases
loaded in the ninth to give
the Senators a 9-8 win in the
only single game of the holi
day program.
Bob Cerv, Gil McDougald
and Hector Lopez also hit
Yankee home runs but the
Senators twice overcame
threerun deficits to win. Jim
Lemon and Fete Wisenant hit
Washington homers to help
earn Don Lee the victory in
relief.
Indians Win Two

fourth-inning double tied the
score in the nightcap and then
the pitchers battled it out un

Roger Craig, making his
first start since May 2, pitched
the Dodgers to their second-
game victory with the help
of homers by Norm Sherry

In the opener, Daryl Spencer

Move to LA
Los Angeles (DPD The San
Francisco Giants return to the
Pacific Coast tonight with
young fireballlng Mike Mc
cormick (9-4) meeting the Los
Angeles Dodgers' Johnny
Podres (7-6) to open a two-
game scries.
Giant pitchers were hotter
than those well-known Fourth
of July firecrackers Monday.
They allowed only 13 hits in
23 innings but could claim
just one victory during the
Holiday doubleheader.
Jack Sanford tossed a neat
four-hit shutout in the opener
as the Giants beat Chicago,
4-0. But the nightcap was
called after 14 innings when
darkness set in on lightless
Wrigley Field with the score
tied 1-1.
Largest Cub crowd of the
season, 36,569, saw the Giants
move to within five games of
league-leading Pittsburgh, and
one and a half of runner-up
Milwaukee. The two pace-set
ters split with each other.
Willie Mays slammed a
homer and a double during
three trips in the first game
and went 2-for-6 in the second
to boost his major league
leading mark to .371. The
centerfielder also extended
his consecutive game hitting
streak to 19.
Sanford earned his eighth
victory against five setbacks
while facing just 32 men, five
over the minimum. He didn't
allow a hit until rookie Ron
Santo blooped a double to
lead off the fifth.
The Giants took a 1-0 lead
in the second when Bob
Schmidt singled home Felipe
Alou, who had doubled.
Schmidt blasted his fourth
homer of the season in the
fifth, to send home Andre
Rodgers, who also smacked a
two-bagger. Mays added the
final tally with his 18th
roundtripper ot the campaign
in the sixth.
Dick Ellsworth, the starter,
went six innings and was
charged with his fourth loss.
Don Blasingame's consecu
tive batting string was halted
at nine games.
In the second, Giant starter
Johnny Antonclll loaded the
bases in the second on two
walks and a double. Manager
Tom Sheehan then waved in
Stu Miller, who ended the
rally with only one run scor
ing on a sacrifice fly.
San Francisco tied it in the
fourth as Mays and Willie
Kirkland each singled and Or
lando Cepeda doubled.
The marathon lasted four
hours and 10 minutes.

Athletics had a vote of con

pitching staff took some criti

Parke Carroll, vice prcsl

the Athletics, squelched ru

way out In his first season
as the A's pilot Monday after
Kansas City had dropped a
doubleheader to the Cleveland
Indians.
Asked if the former Na

baseman was about to be
fired, Carroll exclaimed:
"Good heavens, no! Our
manager Is doing a good Job.
It s pitching we need.
"It Isn't Elliott's fault that
the pitching has collapsed."
Kansas City, one one-half
game out of the American
League cellar, has lost 15 of
Its last 20 games-nine during
the last home stand and six
of the first seven games on
the current road trip.
"We need pitching help
Carroll said, "and we don't
