Soff-Rot Disease
Discovered on Corn
Madison, Wis. -(Science
Servlce)-A new oft-rot, dis
covered on a farm near the
Wisconsin river in Wisconsin
and in other localities In Wis
consin. Maryland and the
Carolinas is now under study
here.
The soft-rot kills corn plants
by attacking the stems so that
they eventually break and the
plants fall to the ground.
Losses due to the disease on
the farm where it was ais
covered amounted to about
ten Dcr cent of the crop.
Research scientists at the
University of Wisconsin have
discovered that the cause or.
the disease is a bacterium of
the coliform group which ap
pears to be introduced in
overhead spray irrigation. It
was observed that the soft-rot
occurs only when river or
stream water is sprayed on
the plants from above and
not when the same water is
used in furrow irrigation. No
traces of the disease have
been reported when artesian
water is used in irrigation,

ly named Menelaus, for the
legendary Greek hero who
was King of Sparta and hus
band of the beautiful Helen
o Troy, whose kidnaping re
sulted in the Trojan Wars.
The asteroid, or minor
planet, previously known as
1957 MK, was discovered oy
Dr. S. B. Nicholson of Mt.
Wilson and Palomar Observa
tories, Pasadena, Calif. By
long-accepted custom, persons
who discover asteroids name
them. Dr. Nicholson said the
name was selected to enable
another famous Greek to join
his compatriots in the swarm
of asteroids to the east of
Jupiter.

of the Bureau's data process

pected to be used in simulat
ing the problems met In de
signing missiles and aircraft.
Combining features of analog

possible with an analog com
puter alone.
