Wild Flower Once
Was Used to Kill Files
Thero Is European Immi
grant among the wild flow
ers that sneaked Into Amer
ica and established Itself
firmly In waste places, along
roadsides or In neglected
fields.
It carries Its yellow and
brown tubular flowers In clus-ter-hcuds
atop a tall stem und
has an odor somewhat resem
bling old cheese.
This Is the wild flower
known as Toadflax, but which
has acquired another rather
ridiculous name. Every farm
boy knows the plant as, "but
ter and eggs" or "eggs and
bacon."
Many of the wild flowers
have Intriguing names usually
indicating some common char
acteristic, such as color, habit
of growth or obvious color.
Some names however, seem
a little far-fetched, even
though faintly descriptive at
times. The guy who named
this plant must have been lute
for breakfast or missed the
meal entirely, otherwise he
never would have thought of
such a name. But It stuck.
Meek and Ptebian
"Butter and eggs" is a
meek plcblan plant, almost a
waif among the wild flowers
of the field, yet It is tough
and hardy. It can live and
thrive In soils ond under con
ditions most other plants
could never tolerate. In the
most unfertile of soils and
moisture lack, It can even en
large Us range to take over
entire fields.
A dry sundy soil Is merely
a challenge, something read
ily overcome and conquered.
The farmer treats It as an en
emy. Livestock avoid it be
cause of Its disagreeable
taste, but It had Its place, and
enjoyed a tiny segment of use
fulness. In minor way It
once served purpose.
A long time ago, before the
days of commercial insecti
cides, many rural people
knew the potency of the toad
flax for killing flics. The
Juice of the plnnt was mixed
with sweet milk, the resultant
concoction placed where flics
were present.
Around the farm kitchen or
on the back porch of the farm
house there were many of
these household pests, but
they became fewer as more
and more of them drank of
the lethal fluid. Due to its pe
culiar taste, the farm cat
avoided the saucer of milk.
No Resemblance
The same objectionable fla
vor also kept the livestock at
a respectful distance. The
family cow didn't see any re
semblance between "break
fast bacon and eggs" or "but
ter and eggs" with this cheesy
smelling plant.
The bumblebees, however,
saw In the Toadflax a rich
source of reward in the form
of nectar. And the bee was
the only flying Insect heavy
enough to force down the
small spur at the base of each
yellow tubular blossom In or
der to get at the sweet nectar
within.
When the bee gathered Its
Public acceptance of presi
dential recreation is fur more
sympulhetic today than it use
to be.
Waller Lord, In his new
book, "Hie Good Years," re
alls the advice outgoing Pres
ident Theodore Roosevelt
gave William Howard Taft,
the Republican presidential
cundidates in the 1008 cam
paign. "The folly of mankind is
difficult to fathom," Roose
velt told Taft. "It would seem
Incredible that any one would
care one way or the other
about your playing golf, but I
have received literally hun
dreds of letters from the west
protesting about it. . . .
"I, myself, play tennis, and
that game Is a little more
familiar; . . . You never saw a
photograph of me playing ten
nis. I'm careful about that;
photographj on horseback,
yes; tennis, no. And golf is
fatol."
But Teddy felt It was little
or none of the public's busi
ness when he disappeared for

Secrecy Labels Ordered Taken
From Tons of Old Documents

defense department hus Issued
orders to .trip the secrecy la
bels from tons of old docu
ments which have accumulat
ed In guarded storehouses
across the land.
Reduced storage costs for
records no longer needing
protection could run to sev
eral hundred thousand dollars
a year.
The declassification process
will be automatic for most
documents from now on,
Deputy Defense Secretary
James H. Douglas announced.
Time will be the criterion for
discarding secrecy classifica
tions. 12-Year Tim Limit
The automatic time limit
feature Is the keynote of the
new plan. Once a paper is 12
years old, It will be "declas
sified" entirely. Anyone who
wants to examine it, presum
ably may do so.
Douglas' directive exempt
ed "extremely sensitive doc
uments" from the automatic
downgrading plan, however.
It may take 25 years to get
records such as an Intelligence
report or an Item on submar
ine tactics, cut down from
"to secret" to the minimum
classification of "confiden
tial." Such sensitive papers can
be turned loose to the public
-If ever -only after special
review.
The Pentagon action was
enormous in scope. But it will
benefit chiefly historians and
researchers.
In this particular action,
the department did not deal
with complaints - and there
are many - about its handling
of day-to-day data about
America's defense policies
and military forces.
Standard Caution Rpatd
Douglas did repeat a stan
dard Pentagon caution, con
tained in earlier directives,
that "arbitrary and unreas
onably withholding" of in
formation must be avoided.
He said concealment of mis
takes and embarrassment is
no ground for withholding
otherwise reicasable data. As
sistant secretary Murray Sny
der said the department had
scrupulously observed that
policy.
Snyder, who is In charge
of the declassification project
as well as all other Pentagon
Information activities, hailed
the downgrading of old docu
ments as a "trail-blazing ef
fort that will be copied" by
other government agencies.
To emphasize the enorm
ity of the project, he cited
the downgrading of one batch
of archives tnat occupied
7,000 cubic feet of space -the
equivalent, he said, of a
dozen stacks as high as the
555-foot Washington monu
ment, The opportunities for sav
ings are obvious. It costs
about 80 cents a year for each
cubic foot of unclassified rec
ords stored in ordinary ware
houses. But the cost is $2 for
secret material kept in expen
sive buildings with special
flies, alarm systems and
guards.
In 1058, the department Is
sued an order declassifying
most of the defense docu
ments which originated prior
to 1048. There were at that
time 325,000 cubic feet of
documents, probably compris
ing 660 million pieces of pa
per. The Pentagon said that doc
uments being downgraded by
today's directive Included:
World War II reports on
the lend-lease program, some
Korean war reports, Inventor
ies of defense department real
estate and facilities, docu
ments on personnel manage
ment, training materials, re
ports on administration in oc
cupied areas, papers dealing
with war-time controlled ma
terials, plans, production and
procurement, records of com
bat units deactivated aftor
World War II.

sea and air combat forces, In
telligence and counter-intelligence
documents, radar and
aerial photogrophy, reports on

Rhee Government
Officials on Trial

dent Syngman Rhee's govern
ment went on trial in District
Court todoy for a list of
charges that ranged from elec
tion fraud to bribery.
The trial opened a new
phase of the clean-up cam
paign conducted by the revo
lutionary government which
took over after Rhee's pow
erful regime was toppled by
student riots earlier this year.
On trial were 10 former
cabinet ministers, 13 mem
bers of Rhee's former ruling
Liberal party's braintrust, 4
bankers, a former national
police director, and 2 Home
Affairs Ministry officials.
Officials said they would
hold night trial sessions to
try to end the mass trial by
mid-August.
