contested delegates may come
at the opening session during
adoption of the temporary
roll, or at the second session,
after the permanent chair
man's speech, on adoption of
tho permanent roll of dele
gates. '

some delegates or a choice be

After these contests, if any,
are settled, adoption of the
party platform la the next ma

Democrats will have their
quadrennial row between
their northern and southern
contingents over a civil rights
plank.
To Honor Elsenhower
The Republicans will de
vote one of their preliminary
sessions this year to honoring
President Eisenhower and
to hearing a speech from him.
After the preliminaries,
the convention moves into its
climatic stage with nomina
tion of candidates for presi
dent. To avoid boring and los
ing their TV audiences, each
party will limit the number
and time of nominating
speeches and the time for
demonstrations.
By hoary tradition, the
nominating speech for each
candidate is followed by a
noisy demonstration In which
his followers parade around
the hall, waving placards and
singing, and trying to give the
impression that practically
everybody is for their man.
The mention of the candi
date's name is the usual sig
nal for setting off the bedlam,
which makes it necessary for
the nominating speaker to re
sort to all sorts of evasions
("the man who . . .") to avoid i
mentioning the name before ;
the end of h!s speech. ,
Once all of the nominations :
have been ma le and sec- j
onded, the convention is
ready to ballot. The clerk j
calls the roll of the states, 1
and the chairman of each :

various nominees. I
Early Nixon Choice
The Republicans may well
nominate Vice President
Richard M. Nixon on the first
ballot, but the Democrats
could be in for several roll
calls before any nominee
clinches the necessary ma
jority. Back in 1924, when it
took a two-thirds majority to I
nominate a Democratic can
didate, a deadlocked conven
tion staggered through 103
ballots.
Then comes the nomination
of a vice presidential candi-date-usually
chosen by the
presidential nominee or an
inner circle around him -and
the acceptance speeches
from both candidates.
The convention is then over
and the presidential cam
paign is underway.
Albacore Tuna
Spotted Off Coast
Portland - (DPI) - A spokes
man for the State Game Com
mission said today albacore
tuna have been spotted about
110 miles off the Oregon
coast.
Roger Budlong, public rela
tions officer for the commis
sion, said the tuna were seen
by a team of biologists and
occangraphers from the Game
Commission and Oregon State
college.
Budlong said data was not
complete enough to say
whether the run was com
mercially profitable. The
sighting was made by crews
of the ship "Morning Star"
of Astoria, about 110 miles
west-by-northwest of Cape
Blanco.
