The opera Itself Is of top
rank, but that's only part of
the story.
There's nothing elto In the
world quite like Glynde
bourne, whose sca.ion runs to
Aug. 10. Consider the setting:
A 400-ycar-old FMIr.ubclhnn

glorious gardens and lawns

Located in the rolling hills
of Sussex 34 miles from Lon
don, Glyndebourne Is the
achievement of John Christie,
wealthy, dynamic Eton sci
ence teacher whose ancestors
have lived at Glyndebourne
since Norman times.
In 1031 Christie married
Audrey St. John Mildmoy,
the daughter of a baronet and
operatic soprano with the
Curl ftosn Opera company.

and to wonder why England
had nothing like them.
The ambition grew in the
Christies to bring that kind
of opera to England, and In
1033 Adolf Hitler came to
power In Germany and helped
them.
With the advent of Jllller,
Hie great German conductor
r'rllr Ilusch left Germany In
prolest and took wllh him
producer Carl Ebcrt. The
Christies persuaded them to
come to Glyndebourne, and
with them came Rudolf Blng
of Berlin's Civic Opera house.
Told of Dream
The Christies told these
men of their dream, and Glyn
debourne opera was born.
Todny, Busch Is dead. Eb
crt is in his 70 s and on the
point of retiring, and Bing
rules as general manager of
the Metropolitan npern in
New York. Mrs. Christie Is
dead, and Chrlslfe, at 77, Is
In seml retlrement.
But Glyndebourne lives on.
In 11)34 a special Glynclo
bourne arts trust was set up
which now administers the
opera. The first Glyndebourne
festival was given in 1034
and It has been going aver
since, most of the time under
Its own steam. Only once did
It receive a government sub
sidy. Talent Is recruited from
throughout the world. A typ
ical cast is apt to Include
Americans, Italians, French,
Austrians, Germans and Ca
nadians among others.
Going to the opera at
Glyndebourne is unusual In
many ways. For one, if you
art going up from London
you find yourself donning
evening clothes - evening
dress Is "recommended" at
Glyndebourne - In mid-after
noon to catch Ihe 3:43 p.m.
Glyndebourne special from
Victoria station. For another,
If you have been to Glynde
bourne before you likely will
puck a picnic basket.
The Glyndebourne estab
lishment offers a fine dining
room plus a buffet counter,
a well-stucked and comfort
able bar and lounge, and flow
ered terraces on which to sit
and sip coffee and brandy,
Champagn Goes Along
But many prefer the lark
of plcnlcing, evening clothes
and all, on the grass amid
Glyndcbourne's lusli gardens
and Illy ponds. And since this
is not something anyone gets
to do very often, Glynde
bourne plcniccrs are prone to
packing a bottle or two of
Champagne along with the
roast chicken Joints, sand
wiches and pickles.
Glyndcbourne's manage
ment makes possible either
dining or picnicing in liesure
ly style. The evening this
writer first saw Glynde
bourne, lured by a magnifi
cently sung "Der Kozcnka
valler," the three -act opera
was broken by two long inter
vals. The first was of half
hour duration, long enough
for cocktail and a walk
along Ihe terraces and
through Glyndcbourne's lux
uriously furnished sitting
rooms.
The second Intermission
was an hour. Those who had
dining room reservations re
paired there, but the greater
number. by far collected their
picnic baskets from the cloak
room or their cars, and head
ed for the lawns and gardens.
Glyndebourne. founder
John Christie has said, "is a
survival of the old fashioned
courtly values firmly rooted
In the modern world." And
it Is Just that.
